Who you gonna call? Even though I want to punch myself in the face for saying that, how can you not start off a Ghostbusters game preview without that classic line? Now that we have that out of the way, let’s talk about what you really care about, the game. Atari picked up the license for the Ghostbusters game and ran with it. What they spit out the end is somewhat impressive.
The biggest news is that the game is being fully written by Dan Ackroyd and Harold Ramis, so you can fully expect a high level of comedic action. All of the original cast members are voicing their respective characters, which is huge for keeping the true to the films.
You start off the game approximately 2 years after the end of the second movie as a new guy to the crew who’s tasked with testing out all of Eegon’s new gadgets. Not all of them work too well, as you’ll find out. You’ll be able to use your proton pack to catch ghosts or fully destroy anything you’d like in the environment. All of the game’s graphics, effects, and animations look terrific. During our interview with Glen Gamble, the game’s artistic director, he indicated that Dan Ackroyd is in studio at least once a week to play test the game and make comments and tweaks, and it really shows.

While Atari couldn’t speak too much about multiplayer yet, they did assure me the game will have co-op and a solid multiplayer mode. I asked about 4 person co-op, but they couldn’t comment. I don’t see why that wouldn’t be a possibility, given the number of Ghostbusters on screen.
For true fans, Ecto1 is in the game, however you can’t get behind the wheel. It’s just there to provide ammo and equipment and during cutscenes. Glen Gamble indicated they didn’t want to tack on a crappy driving sequence just for the sake of having one, which I can fully appreciate.
There was one thing that bothered me about the game, but it’s very very minor. Crossing the streams does not unleash hell and a new dimension. In the movies, this was the utmost worst thing that can happen. In the game, unless you’re on the highest difficulty, it’ll just knock you back and overheat the proton pack. I would have liked to see Zuul appear and whoop your ass if you cross the streams. Maybe in the sequel.
From my hands on time with the game, my excitement level has only increased. I’ve seen each of the Ghostbusters movies at least 25-30 times, so getting to play the final game is top on my list for its June 25th release date. There will be demo a couple weeks beforehand, so make sure to look out for that.

This looks like a great game, I’d like to play it.
