When I hear or read the words “Resident Evil”, I immediately think something is going to try to scare the shit out of me and try to rip my head off. Widely considered the greatest horror franchise of all time, RE:5 is promising to do to us just that but in its first true next gen form. I went into this demo expecting the second coming of Christ. I left a little disappointed and bummed out.
The most obvious criticism I have at this moment is the movement of the players. They move like tanks. Imagine trying to parallel park a school bus, that is what it feels like. To say that they turn slow is an understatement. Especially when you are surrounded by zombies with machetes, wrenches, and God knows what else. The aiming is also a bit off. The weapons so far are laser guided but the controls feel very stiff.
Without spoiling the demo for you, let me tell you this. Ammo is an absolute privilege in this game, not a right. The amount of enemies you will face exceeds the bullets you are allowed to have. Especially when the female character has a sniper rifle which does not bode well when you are surrounded in close quarters. You can be prompted to punch, kick, etc when close enough, but you will get grabbed and inevitably killed by those around you before you can roundhouse your way out. I found this totally frustrating and I found all the “hidden” ammo in the drawers; there just is not enough.
The graphics were very, very good, but not great. Zombies looked repetitive and they did not show bullet damage as we all would have thought. We have come to expect that type of detail here and it just was not present. I know this may be nit-picking, but a game of this hype will be scrutinized. The environments are nice, but you rarely have time to admire them due to all the carnage around you.
Resident Evil: 5 will be a great game, that I am sure of. The demo, however, was very frustrating, difficult, and left you to wonder if the entire game is going to be like this. I would absolutely not write RE:5 off as not being a great game, but this demo did not make me want to preorder a copy as soon as I played it. I honestly thought I was going to.

The controls in the demo were really frustrating. I hear the RE4 style controls work better, but I haven’t tried. Either way, I hope Capcom puts in some work before the final release in March.
Can’t wait to play the entire game!!!
When I first tried it during the Japan demo days everything just felt way too heavy. The dude isn’t wearing any armor so there is no need to make the characters feel so weighted.
They didn’t show any plot what-so-ever so i have a feeling that the final product will be amazing.
dude game is sick. i fort it was rubbish until i got good now i totally own me an my friend do it every time with ease. have like 40 pistol ammo an 125 machine ammo to left over. graphics are sexy gameplay could be quicker turning e.t.c but full game i’m sure they will deliver
I just played it on the PS3. Both levels felt like the ‘mercanaries’ mini game from RE4. That was fun, but I prefer the actual gameplay of working my way through spooky levels solving the odd puzzle and tactically taking out the zombies. Mercanaries style gameplay, without the fun bonus combo meter isn’t a lot of fun.
For me this is a situation in which a demo has made me change my mind about making a pre-order. I will instead wait for the first full reviews to see just what type of game RE5 is going to be. The controls suit Resident Evil…. but they don’t suit a full-on action game.
Also, I’m not so keen on babysitting Sheva for the entire game… at least Ashley would climb into a safe metal box every now and then and had the decency to leave me alone for two thirds of the game.
