Xbox 360 Install Base at 28 Million

Looks like Microsoft isn’t quite yet finished bragging about the Xbox 360 sales figures from last year.  The Xbox 360 had it’s best year ever, selling more consoles in 2008 than any other year previous.

The Xbox 360 has seen it’s install base climb to 28 million units worldwide, expanding it’s lead over the PS3 by more than 8 million units.  The Xbox Live community has also seen a great increase in users.  Xbox Live now has more than 17 million active members.  Microsoft has seen an 84 percent increase in online spending from the previous year.  Since the launch of the Xbox 360, more than 1 billion dollars have been spent on Xbox Live.

Microsoft’s gaming division seems to have found a groove.  All of the new online content coupled with the release of NXE probably had a hand in all of the increased sales figures.  It seems that Microsoft is happy as long as they are beating the PS3 because there is no mention of that other white console in any of these figures.

  1. Pretty impressive numbers, although still completely dwarfed by the Wii. I don’t think anyone expected Nintendo to come out of the gate the way they did.

  2. Good for the Xbox 360. :) That’s awesome news. Gears 2 does kick ass, so can’t expect any less.

I agree. Nintendo shocked the crap out of everyone with how they came out. I was one of those fools standing outside the Nintendo store for 13 hours to get one of those.

  3. @Yaris – I camped for 13 hours outside a Best Buy in December for one. Was actually really fun. Everyone was super cool, we all played DS, took turns making Dunkin Donuts runs. Nothing like trying to get a PS3

Even though I got my new digital frame and am really excited about it, I have to still be impressed with the numbers that xbox managed to sell. They are a fun gaming system- so it doesn’t surprise me that they would do so well.

Does that 28 million include the millions of defective 360’s that had to be repaired? And if so, does that mean 12 of the 28,000,000 are Matt’s?
