Drum roll please… We’re finally here. You’ve seen our pics for each console and the ones that didn’t exactly live up to expectation, now we’re breaking it down for the best overall game of 2008. Without further ado, here are the winners.
Coming in third place is Grand Theft Auto IV from Rockstar Games. GTA IV set the bar for open world games with it’s involving story, crisp graphics and physics, and all around fun gameplay. Couple that with some solid multiplayer modes and I can’t imagine many people not wanting to own this game.
Second place goes to Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots from Konami. Solid Snake’s swan song brought about huge amounts of emotion from the player as the game’s five acts spanned highly detailed locals. Hideo Kojima did a great job of melding the tried-and-true stealth gameplay with more shooting action and the story is one of the best of the year.
And in first place for Loot Ninja’s 2008 Game of the Year is Gears of War 2 from Epic Games. Gears 2 steps it up in so many ways from the original with an amazing campaign, fun multiplayer gameplay, and Horde mode which will be played for many months to come.
Congratulations to Rockstar Games, Konami, and Epic for their hard work and great games! Let’s see what happens in 2009…

I am calling GOTY 2009 right now – UFC Undisputed or Fight Night 4, thats right I have that high hopes for those two games.
How many free copies for gow2 were given to loot ninja to select it as game of the year?
Really?
Gears 2?
Really?
The only great part of the game was multiplayer, and that’s only because horde mode was awesome…but i personally dont think a game should win based on 1 multiplayer mode. In your own ‘pod cast’ you even said how lame the last boss was(as well as other bosses). You also mention that the story line was basically the same as gears 1, sans a love interest.
But, ok, it was a great game, and fun to play co-op with a friend, but i really dont think it could be considered game of the year over some of the other great titles put out in 2008. Fine for best game on XBox, but where’s the Fallout 3 love?
Don’t even get me started about GTA IV in the top 3. boooooooooo.
@loots – Yeah, now that I have had time with Gears 2 I would want that vote back. Gears 2 is just too broken to deserve GOTY.
I think that’s a fair enough list. The only thing is that both GTA4 and MGS4 came in the Spring/Summer, and so their appeal wouldn’t have been as immediate as GW2.
@bones – Yeah, that’s always a tough thing. The games released later in the year are always fresh on the brain and sometimes you can forget about the older titles. A lot of times, the Holiday games are the best. This year, things were a little more spread out in terms of the blockbuster titles.
I WANT TO BUY THIS GAME IN INDIA , WHRE Can i buy
