On the 26th of December you will now be able to use your DS as a book with ‘100 Classic Book Collection’.  Titles such as Gulliver’s Travel, Around the World in Eighty Days, and more will make use of the DS dual screens to present text to you like pages in a book.  No real graphical adventures here, just your imagination.  All for GBP 20.

Some neat futures that will make this better than a normal book are:

  • Electronic book marking (if this wasn’t there then you shouldn’t buy it).
  • The ability to download additional titles to the DS.
  • Mood suggestions provides a list of titles to match your mood.

I think this will make the DS a little more engaging to everyone.  Parents can feel their kids get more out of their video games by offering reading.  For one I, pretending to be an adult, don’t have to carry a book and my DS on the train for entertainment anymore.  As a bonus this title is cheaper than buying each of the actual books individually.

A ‘NOVEL’ WAY TO SPEND CHRISTMAS WITH THE WHOLE FAMILY

Read 100 novels from authors including Austin, Bronte, Dickens, Hardy, Shakespeare and Wilde on your Nintendo DS

1st December 2008 – Transform your Nintendo DS into a fully portable library this Christmas as ‘100 Classic Book Collection’ launches on 26th December exclusively for Nintendo DS. Holding your Nintendo DS horizontally, just like a book, you can discover 100 classic novels from some of the world’s best known and best loved authors on a small, convenient portable handheld device for just £20.*

Nintendo has worked with publisher HarperCollins to select and include titles from the world’s of Adventure, Drama, Mystery, Fantasy, Romance, Tragedy, Comedy Women’s and Children’s literature so you can now join Gulliver on his travels, go Around the World in Eighty Days, sleuth with Sherlock Holmes or disappear 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. With 100 books in one small portable system you might never be stuck for anything to read again.

Not sure what a particular book is about? The story synopsis mode details the story and themes of each title without giving away any of twists and turns of the plot. If you’re stuck for somewhere to start, simply tell the software your mood and it will present a range of options to choose from. The software also offers an electronic bookmark so you can pick up right where you left off and also offers adjustable text sizes to further enhance the reading experience. You can also download up to ten additional novels using Nintendo’s Wi-Fi Connection service and store them on the Nintendo DS console.

The ‘100 Classic Book Collection’ is part of Nintendo’s Touch! Generations collection – a range of software that offers a unique variety of accessible ways to play. Touch! Generations titles can help you train your brain, play sudoku, help improve your visual abilities, make music or connect with people thousands of miles away.

No matter what your age or whether you’ve never picked up a games console before, Touch! Generations titles can help rediscover old talents and develop new skills.

‘100 Classic Book Collection’ is available from 26th December 2008 at the estimated retail price of around £20. Nintendo DS Lite console is available now in a range of colours including White, Black, Red, Silver, Green, Turquoise and Pink at the estimated retail price of around £99.

How the hell will you be able to read a book on those tiny screens?

  2. @ nostars – My guess would be squinting a lot. lol

  3. I think this is actually a terrific idea. Let kids read some classics and have it be fun since it’s on the DS.

What happened to the old school chain ‘em to the radiator until they finish the book? Damn people and their “laws” against “child abuse”.

Squinting a lot especially for reading a long period of time messes up your eyes, lol. This sounds like a good and bad idea I guess.

we are all pretty used to reading 12-10pt type on computer monitors for years now and I doubt it will be much smaller than that, if at all.

  7. They could make it like an iPhone where you can just zoom in on text?

  8. I would hope it has the zoom function.
The more I stare at my monitors the worse my eyes get. I’m worried about not fitting enough text on the screen at one time.
