Game installs on the PS3 have become a huge problem. We’ve seen hard drives fill to capacity already and there looks to be no end in sight. I was pleasantly surprised when Resistance 2 nixed that huge 5GB install that most games these days require.
This isn’t to say there’s no install. The game drops roughly 350MB of data onto your hard drive, which takes about 90 seconds. Not bad at all considering games like NBA 09 The Inside use over 2.5GB of precious hard drive space.
I just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Kudos, Insomniac! Good job stepping in and putting a stop (or at least a pause) the problematic game installs that are plaguing the PS3. Keep up the good work!
It is nice to see that Dev’s are reducing the HD usage for PS3 games (at least for Resistance) because as you said the HD’s are filling up too quick for some users.
Yeah definitely a good move on there part. If a game with 420 hours of content can pull off a 350mb install only and has very little load times, why does these other games need so much?
Lazy devs
They are indeed lazy, because other devs like Infinity Ward and Naughty Dog have made some of th ebest looking games in the PS3 with no installs, and in Uncharted’s case there is no loading, so if they want it they can do it.
The reason for Uncharted not having hard drive installs is because Naughty Dog allowed the game to cache the hard drive, to eliminate loading during gameplay. So technically there is a hard drive install, but it takes place while u are playing the game and is cleared from the hard drive after turning the game off.
Most developers are being lazy in their coding process, which results in these hdd installs, but then again there are certain situations where developers incorporates the data on the disc twice (Oblivion) so there wont be hdd installs at all.
At the end of the day, its all up to the developer on how they want to structure the game and what’s easy for them. Just be glad you are not limited to certain hdds like the Xbox 360 console. If you run out of space, drop $60-$80 and get a 120GB or bigger hdd.
why are hard drive installs considered such a bad thing? they increase game performance and decrease time spent reading the disc!
i 100% agree i have the 60gb model and its full already, i had to delete some games off to make room! i feel sorry for anyone who bought the 20gb or 40gb. iam getting a 400gb hdd for xmas so i wont care much then but the large installs are becoming a joke

because some games demand a nifty hard drive install “to speed up” loading times and sometimes even though its installed it doesnt help at all with the loading e.x. R6V2 has roughly 3gb install and the load times are horrendous.
in topic its a great way for insomniac to go, and devs should take a lesson or two from them
350mb is nothing! Thank god man, because I can’t stand another game that takes more than 3gb of space. GT5P takes up over 5! WTF
Why cant all ps3 games be like Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. No Install and once your past the menu, you can play the whole game start to finish without a single loading screen.
