Game Installs Making 40GB PS3 Obsolete

It has been 7 months since I purchased my 40 GB PS3. It was made possible by a nice federal tax return; it pays to be a homeowner. Anyway, I could not be happier with the machine. Its Bluray functionality is worth the $400 bucks alone and it has been a rock since day one. Its Xbox 360 brother had to be sent “home” twice since I got it at launch. Nevertheless, my 40 GB hard drive is full. Already. Again, I am not bashing the PS3 at all, I am just wondering how I could have a full hard drive, that is TWICE the size of the Xbox 360, and I have had the console for just over a half of a year as opposed to 3 full years.

This is what I have listed in the Game Data menu (required game installs):

MLB The Show 2008, MGS4, DMC4, Bioshock, Socom: Confrontation (Disc Version), Soul Caliber 4, Pixeljunk: Eden, Warhawk (Disc Version).  That’s it.

I had to delete the following just to install the new Socom patch because I had reached my limit:

Siren: Blood Curse (Full Game), The Bourne Conspiracy, and Elefunk.

As you can see, I don’t have many games installed because my hard drive was full. That is a grand total of 5 full games, 2 online only games, and one PSN game and my HDD was basically jam packed. Now, I do have some space at the moment because I got 14 GB back from Siren and Bourne because I never play them, but what if I did?

These game installs are becoming a huge pimple on the ass of PS3 owners everywhere. Sony has made a phenomenal machine which is more technically advanced than the Xbox 360, but has limited it with these absurd game installs that do NOTHING for me. I’ll wait an extra 30 second for a load time to save some much needed hard drive space. I have around 50 games on the 360, and still have 6 GB left on my original 20 GB hard drive.  I will have to go out and buy a 200 GB hard drive, drop it in and forget about this for awhile, but that is not the point. The “included” hard drive should be enough to get me at least 10 game installs.

Is this my fault for not buying the 80 GB?  Maybe. But, you can see, I don’t download anything from the PSN. I am not a fan of Arcade titles and don’t buy movies or shows or anything of the sort. I don’t rip movies to the PS3 because I need that room for the games to play.  This is the biggest downfall with the console. They have handicapped the gamer in making decisions on what games they want to be installed and the ones they do not. If I want to uninstall DMC4, it takes me 3 seconds. If I want to play it again, it takes 25 minutes. I can only hope that Sony somehow remedies this or starts handing out cheaper hard drive vouchers like MS is doing for Arcade/Core owners. Judging by the recent NPD sales, Sony needs to do something. It would be a shame for so many people not to experience the power the PS3 can bring.

erasing elefunk was hard to do.

  2. I have a 200gb hard drive in my PS3 with over 100gb used. I have 1 mp3 album and 1 movie ripped to the hard drive, so everything else is game stuff.

I don’t understand why people think the “a new hard drive is cheap” explanation is a valid one. Sony sells a product (which was the only viable SKU for a while) that doesn’t hold up to the barrage of games that require 5gb installs. The root of the problem is the installs themselves, which is what needs to be addressed (and fast)

I own one to an yes I fill it up in about a week or so and the best thing to do is just find a cheap 320GB HD to threw in it. I found one thats 89 bucks an its 320GB’s.

I knew this was going to happen. If you look through my older posts I called that this was going to be the outcome and the whole “Ooo I have 40GB of space” would turn out to be not as epic as it sounded.

  5. I see this being the same issue with the XBOX 360 and NXE offering this feature. Only problem is, ~$140-150 MSRP for the 120GB HDD kit ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103062 ), even though a person can pick up a 120GBf for ~$50-60 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148214 ) or even a real nice 250GB 7,200RPM model for only $75-80 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148364 ). I understand that Microsft is a company and out to make $$$ but 150% profit margin seems a bit ridiculous. I’m ME gets much better pricing at the bulk they purchase.

Game installation is not a problem.

Games DO NOT take 25 minutes to install.

I step out for a cigarette, and the game is typically done, no more than ten minutes in EXTREME cases.

The benefits far outweigh the negatives, that’s why Microsoft has adopted the system for their new XBOX Experience. It’s quite beneficial to have data streamed from the drive – better for your hardware in the long run, no denying that…

Delete something you aren’t playing at the moment. Or buy a new hard drive. Either way, please stop weakly attempting to gain notoriety by ranting about BS issues that have been beaten TO DEATH, OVER, and OVER AGAIN.

Please, stop linking to irrelevant SHIT like this on N4G! I’ll send you a dollar!

  7. I meant: 150% profit margin. It’s likely much more like 200%
I meant: I’m sure M$ gets much better pricing.

Anyone know a simple way of upgrading the 360 HDD? Cloning work? I thought I read it didn’t.

Doesn’t the PS3 use a 2.5″ SATA drive as well? Just easier to upgrade.

It’s called maintenance, do some! I have a 60 gig ps3, have had it pretty much since launch (i did manage to break the first one i had, due to a power failure corrupting my HD) and I end up deleting things all the time. Siren was a huge game, and if you weren’t playing it, free’s up a bit of space. If you aren’t playing other games, like MGS4, delete its data to, you wont loose your saves SONY thought it through and put the saves in a different folder for a reason. Is it a little annoying, yes, but it could be a lot worse. You could have bought a 360 arcade, to find out you need a hard drive to use the NXE which, guess what, LETS YOU INSTALL YOUR GAMES TO THE HARD DRIVE. Obviously Sony screwed up so much, Microsoft is following suit. There are plenty of cheap and efficient issues to fix storage problems on the PS3, and installing a new hard drive is easy peasy, this really shouldn’t be that big of an issue.

  9. yup agrees with the post from bludie, It’s cheap to upgrade to a 320gb(less then USD100) compared to the people who are doing the same on a XB…(paying the same for less and even risking data corruption…WTH) I had filled up my 40gb from all the demos, I’m trying out… It’s fun… I admit it.

So those people on the XB are so going to suffer when they have to install the full game onto their puny drive… which will cost them the same or even more…

Taking that into consideration… your rant is soo not going to be important…

Stop crying and upgrade your HDD. It doesn’t void your warranty, it’s cheap to do and you are likely to have some performance gain if you go with a 7200 rpm. It is dirt cheap at 80 $ !

^ How are 360 installs relevant at all moron? You can CHOOSE to install your game, its not forced like PS3.

  12. [...] installs on the PS3 have become a huge problem. We’ve seen hard drives fill to capacity already and there looks to be no end in sight. I was pleasantly surprised when Resistance 2 nixed that huge [...]

  13. xerometi

QQ and buy a larger HDD. People are never pleased but this seems like an easily avoidable issue by installing a larger drive
