What the Eff… is up with Halo 3?

[Editor's Note: Here's another new weekly segment at Loot Ninja. What the Eff will show up every Thursday, so make sure to keep coming back for more.]

As anyone who plays Halo 3 already knows, or those who enjoy staying up to date with video game news, there have recently been some updates to Halo 3 online.  First of all we’ve been introduced to a new ranking system, which, honestly, I don’t understand nor do I see a great reason for it.  From the way it’s been explained to me, and maybe I’m wrong, by simply gaining experience you will continue to rank up from Recruit to General.  If this fact is the case I hate it.  I feel that if you are skilled enough to attain a level 50, then you are worthy of becoming a General, if not too bad.  It’s just like getting the Hayabasu helmet, if you’re skilled enough to beat the game on Legendary, then people can see that, but don’t allow everyone to become a General for playing a massive amount of multiplayer.  After a while there is going to be an overabundance of General’s, and that annoys me.  I like being able to look at not only a player’s skill level, but their overall rank, to determine whether or not I’m going to get pwnd.

Secondly, why all of a sudden do we start with a pistol.  I’m now constantly changing my assault rifle for a second weapon and switching to behold a pistol rather than my assault rifle.  And, furthermore, did they make the pistol ridiculously powerful like in halo 1, or is it just a few bad experiences?  (Although I do love a sniper-rifle pistol).  I’m just a person who doesn’t like completely unnecessary changes.  I know it’s not that big of a deal to switch out my pistol, but I don’t need any more steps between me and toast and I certainly don’t need to be bothered with these pistol shenanigans.

Also annoying me are some of the map updates–Snowbound, or now Boundless, is the most disgraceful map I’ve ever played.  I don’t think I have ever played on it where one team doesn’t simply camp in the tunnel area.  And I suppose the mapmakers thought they could remedy the issue by ridding the map of some of the shields, yet it seems to only have made the ability to camp worse.  I used to enjoy Snowbound, but now every time I am forced to play it, I debate quitting or getting something to eat while I wait for the game to be over.

One thing I wish the crew at Bungie would, or could update, is to allow each player to rate the maps from favorite to worst.  After you rated your maps, when in matchmaking, you are more likely to join a game with the maps you would like to play.  I’m not sure exactly how the matchmaking works, but I would have to assume there is a way to allow this.  Another qualm I have with the matchmaking are the non-slayer games, i.e., oddball, king of the hill, etc.  I hate playing these games.  However, I don’t want Bungie to rid multiplayer of these playlists, but if a game, whether it be a normal game of Slayer or a specialty game, the second choice should not be a specialty game.  There is nothing that irks me more than vetoing a Slayer game because I don’t feel like playing on Rat Race, and then getting King of the Hill on Boundless–someone might as well have eaten all the ice cream from the freezer, or gotten jelly in my peanut butter; it just makes me want to kill people.

I absolutly totally agree with you! I have been annoyed by these same issues! I have almost stopped playing the game because of these and a few others.

Omg….you’re stupid! Boundless is a separate map, it’s not an update of
Snowbound. It’s just Snowbound without the shielddoors, same goes for the Epitaph variant Epilogue. Besides, why the hell would you flame Bungie for adding new content?! They try to improve and change their game. Not like for example Infinity Ward who hasn’t done anything to CoD4 multiplayer except 1 map pack…
I like it when there’s some new fresh playlists, a new map variant or a new mappack (Mythic coming soon…). If it wasn’t for all the changes Bungie made to the MP, I wouldn’t have started playing again in the first place.

  3. The new maps are refreshes of the original ones, like removing doors and fixing cheats (looking at you The Pit). I think it was necessary to do the updates just to keep people excited and into the game as they wait on new map packs.

ive stopped playing halo 3 all together once i got the few multiplayer achievments that came with the new update i bought mercs 2 and fable 2 so halo 3 is definetly a thing of the past.

im not sure with all the new stuff coming out halo 3 recon will even be worth the achievment points or not.

i feel like we are starting to beat a dead horse. Atleast give us some kind of break on halo before all the new halo games come out.

  5. Yeah I haven’t played Halo 3 in a long time. The new changes have made me not even want to go back

Not to poo poo halo fans or your article but, halo match making has always been horrible. The vote thing has always annoyed me too. I haven’t played since the before the latest update. I still enjoy halo 3 on lan but not so much online, to many annoyances to deal with online.

I’ve pretty much quit Halo. I just couldn’t stand the constant sniper pistol/shotgun setups and people vetoing good maps and a lot of them veto because they want to play snipes. I don’t know if it’s Bungies fault or not, but I simply couldn’t stand it anymore.

  9. The Halo Super Star

I think it is lame anytime somone takes a game so serious that he/she feels he/she is better than somone else because they are better at the game. For crying out loud, it is a “GAME.” If somone wants to play 5 billion games to be a general so what? If your a general because you feel your superior Halo talent got you there then thats how it is. I think people like you ruin the experience for anyone out there who plays the game to have fun and rank up, not everybody wants to be known as “Halo Master General Because I Am Superior,” a lot of people try to have fun, but when there are those out there that forget Halo is a “GAME,” then they start complaining about things that; in reality, don’t matter in everyday life.

What Halo Superstar said. What a whiner this Max Samu is. Damn boy, I’m telling your mom to stop letting you have cookies before bed from now on. Gets you all hyper on your little blog…

This article is incorrect. The Old system is still in place- with an addition; every single playlist now ALSO has a unique rank. So i could be a 50 in doubles, an overall General. And i may of played 50 games in doubles since the TU and am therefore a Lieutenant in Doubles.

And if i go and play slayer im still an overall general. But for that playlist i may be a recruit.

    You Sir are an idiot!

I stopped reading this crap blog after the first paragraph. Why you say? Well it’s obvious that you do not really play that much Halo, if you did you would realize that even though the new ranking system is retarded, this does not mean everyone will become a “General.” Overall skill is always listed when you push that little green button on your controller while you are on their gamertag. Overall skill determines their real skill level in ranked games. And as much as you think being a “General” is a big accomplishment, it isn’t. I can count on one hand how many games i’ve played with a “General” that wasn’t lagging up the anus. If you can get over 5000 exp in a social slayer game, then shit you deserve to be a General in some way, whether ranked or not.

As for your bullshit about the maps being changed up. To everyone that really plays Halo it’s a welcome addition. No shields = different strategy. How often on snowbound do you see two guys staring at each other through a shield door? Well now they can’t do that.

What Bungie needs to do is, instead of double exp every week, double exp should be one week a month or on special occasions. They need to take Infection and give it it’s own matchmaking category. Same with grifball. And instead of Big team make a 6vs6 game type in social.

And for the people that start to lose interest in Halo, its mostly due to you not having real life friends that play Halo with you. It’s boring playing with people you don’t know.
