Metacritic a Fanboy Created Mess

Metacritic is a website that compiles reviews, both user and press for anything tech related. The gamut spans games, movies, and tv. To get press access, you must have a library of published reviews, which Loot Ninja is on the brink of obtaining access.  So where is the ruckus?

Little Big Planet, probably the most anticipated game on the PS3 ever, more so than MGS4, has not hit the streets yet due to the recall.  Xbox 360 fanboys managed to get the user review to below 6. Having no one played this game outside of press, this is obvious an attempt to skew the score lower. Editors at Metacritic are trying to block such occurrences from happening.  The PS3 fanboys struck back in full force giving Gears of War 2 a hefty 4.1.

This is funny and sad at the same time. The reviews mean nothing. Mostly because the game is not even out yet and pardon my ignorance, I don’t think a 13 year old kid has the wherewithal to review anything unless they are a very gifted individual. Anyone who has to resort to guerrilla “reviewing” is probably not that sort.  Metacritic claims they are doing everything to put an end to such bullshit and are exploring all options. Here is a crazy idea… block any user review before a game hits its release date and anyone who submits an obvious early review is banned.  Doesn’t seem like the problem is that hard to solve.

  1. Pretty sad to be honest. How will they keep a PS3 fanboy from sandbagging an Xbox title ratings?
I hope two things happen here.
    1. Some controls are put into place to prevent sandbagging.
    2. People wise up, get a life, and stop spewing hate over video games.

“block any user review before a game hits its release date and anyone who submits an obvious early review is banned. Doesn’t seem like the problem is that hard to solve.” That’s a crazy idea but it might just work!
    /sarcasm.

  4. @ EHT – genius! Early reviews do skew peoples judgements.

Fanboys have skewed reviews since day one, whether it be video games or movies, or just about anything that gets reviewed. It doesn’t just happen in video games. One that comes to mind is paintball markers, where most people have a negative bias against Smart Parts. They make some good markers, but they rarely get the ratings they deserve because of bias against the company.

So it’s only expected that it would happen. And in all honesty, when I am looking to buy something, I look for the negative reviews first to see what is wrong with a product. You can usually tell pretty fast if they full of it or if they are being straight with you.

I only read positive reviews from people I trust, because just like negative reviews, some of the positives are written by fanboys who will embellish their opinion of a title towards the positive.

The people at Metacritic should seriously read all reviews before they allow them to be listed. A little common sense and a little reading would save us the grief of having to read garbage reviews when they’re bundled in with the good ones.
