NPD Sales Data – September 2008

For the first time since March of 2006, the gaming industry saw a 7% year-over-year decline in sales. However, things are still looking up. You have to remember that last September was the launch of Halo 3, and with no huge title this year, it’s obvious the numbers would be lower. To no one’s surprise the Wii and DS took the top two hardware spots for the month. Seriously, Nintendo executives wipe their asses with $100 bills. At least I would. Here’s how they all stacked up:

  • Wii – 687.0K
  • Nintendo DS – 536.8K
  • Xbox 360 – 347.2K
  • PSP – 238.1K
  • PlayStation 3 – 232.4K
  • PlayStation 2 – 173.5K

Not too shabby all around. To see the top 10 games of the month, hit the jump.

  • 360 – STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED – 610K
  • WII – WII FIT W/ BALANCE BOARD – 518K
  • 360 – ROCK BAND 2 – 363K
  • WII – MARIO KART W/ WHEEL – 353K
  • PS3 – STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED – 325K
  • 360 – MERCENARIES 2: WORLD IN FLAMES – 297K
  • WII – WII PLAY W/ REMOTE – 243K
  • 360 – MADDEN NFL 09 – 224K
  • WII – STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED – 223K
  • PS2 – MADDEN NFL 09 – 158K

  1. Techgirl

The economy sucks so the downfall is not surprising. The wii being on top of course is not surprising neither. I admit I was a little shocked at the DS stats.

  2. DS is consistently one of the best selling consoles. Nintendo has always made a ton of $$$ off of their handhelds.

  3. I am always amazed at all of the PS2’s being sold. I just don’t understand why you would purchase one.

  4. Cheap gaming and a cheap DVD player I guess. I see a lot of people buy PS2 for younger kids.
