Activision did the unthinkable. They took on arguably the most anticipated video game in modern history and held the Xbox Live charts for weeks, even months. When Game of the Year awards came out, many writers gave the nod to Call of Duty 4, not Halo 3. Furthermore, CoD 4 was multi-platform and therefore available to a much wider audience. If there was one thing fanboys could agree on, it’s that Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat was an amazing game and the multiplayer experience we all hoped for. The question is, what’s next?
It was only a matter of time until we heard the official news on Call of Duty: World at War. Fans alike assumed the game would stay in the modern era. When the news broke that we would be traveling back in time to none other than World War II, many gamers as well as myself let out a collective sigh. How can they tease us with laser sighted carbines and attack choppers then drop us back to bolt action rifles and attack dogs?
I played the beta last night and I had a good time. I was entertained and that is all we can ask for when it comes to video games. A controlled, enjoyable experience mired in an organized fashion. Nevertheless, we expected this. As I play the game, I cannot help but feel disappointed. I feel like I am being served the same product as before, albeit more polished.

Call of Duty 5 feels like Call of Duty 4, but in World War II. That is my issue. It seems like its the same game we just saw, just with not as cool weapons. The perks system is essentially the same and the kill streak bonus is the exact same thing, just with dated technology. I believe the campaign is going to be as intense as ever, but there is no surprise ending here. World War II has a finite ending. We win. At least in CoD 4, the outcome of the campaign was somewhat in doubt. We new the good guys were going to win, just not sure how.
Call of Duty: World at War is going to be a very good game, no one can doubt that. Activision has all but perfected the FPS. Treyarch is the developer here, not Infinity Ward who headed CoD 4, and CoD 3 (Treyarch developed) was not the killer title that CoD 2 was, but still a worthy successor. After playing the beta for Modern Warfare, I was counting the days until its release. After a taste of World at War, I can’t say I am as enthralled as I’d like to be. I think the timeframe of the game has everything to do with that.

Based on what I’ve seen with the beta on such, I don’t think it’s a step backwards. While Modern Combat is much desired, the gameplay in CoD5 is done very well and provides a good deal of fun
I played the beta as well and felt about the same. It was fun but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I might as well have been playing a CoD4 throwback expansion. Fun yes, but Treyarch seems as if they are standing on the shoulders of giants rather than on their own two feet. On the plus side it did look and play good.
@ Havoc – Spot on, many could consider this an expansion. Just like Brood Wars was an expansion to Starcraft, same thing here. If you like COD4 and just want something a bit different than step right up.
Yea i notice that COD5 reminded me alot of COD4 just because they made it so much like it the shooting the running the killing your hud is alot of the same thing too. COD6 is us suppose to be Sci Fi
That’s what happen when they use the same engine for the most part, but it does look like it has aspects of COD4 but in a different era. I still think this game will be worth playing even if everyone is disappointed about the fact that it’s set in WWII.
Well, first off, if you’re going to take the time to criticize something, at least seem like you cared enough to sound like you gave it a fair review before judging it. IT’S MODERN WARFARE, NOT modern combat…and second, leave the typos to us novice writers, not saying that you are that horrible, but you can forget writing for IGN or whom ever…sorry mate, but it takes less time to spellcheck than to change a roll of toilet paper…I bet you don’t do that either. lol j/k
Anyway The game I disliked at first, but after playing it several times, I found that this game was indeed diff, and because most of us were expecting something more fun or at least as fun as MW, we were immediately disappointed…just merely due to the fact that it felt, looked, sounded very different. It’s a different game! The similarities are due to the recycled animations or in rare cases, sounds…the rest is dramatically different. Can you imagine if they used the same generic A.I. models? Then I would agree that this is just an expansion…all the skins and models are new, just the damn engine was used! OKAY!!?? get over yourselves people…I bet you are all out there playing it right now….til this day. Let me know
