This is stating the obvious, yes there will be more Guitar Hero games coming, but three times as many by the year 2010 seems ridiculous. That means over the course of a couple of years we can expect to see at least 1-2 Guitar Hero games per year, which means World Tour will be old hat in about 6 months time. So let me get this right, I pay $190 for a game and all the instruments just to find out that it is and old piece of crap in a few months? Great! Just great!
I can see triple the content via downloadable content, which would actually extend the life of the GH series games, but mroe new titles is just nuts. Once you get into third and fourth iterations of the game people just aren’t going ot care anymore. This genre of game is on the tale end of the product life cycle and I guess that is why they are planning on pumping out as many titles as they possibly can before the wave of popularity dies out.
Announcing three times the amount of titles for GH just does not carry the same weight anymore. After titles like Guitar Hero Aerosmith and Guitar Hero for the DS, which for all extensive purposes were flops, many gamers cringe when they hear more games coming out. For Activision it needs to be about quality and not quantity, they need to revolutionize the genre and not just flood it. Rock Band was so successful because it changed what you could do in this style of game.
Activison needs to think outside of the box with this series and try to develop something new and fresh because if not people will grow tired of this genre and move on to other things. Perhaps a Guitar Hero game that is like an MMORPG, where you need to group wit other bands and build your career with stats, women, gear, etc.? World of Guitar Hero anyone?
Activision Blizzard will triple the amount of Guitar Hero titles and content it offers by 2010, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith revealed today at the company’s Analyst Day.
That expansion extends to both retail titles and downloadable content for the popular multi-instrument music game series, and follows Activision’s plans to double the amount of Guitar Hero releases in 2009.
The growth will be accomplished by bringing in more developers and more hardware suppliers, Griffith explained. Late last week, the company purchased UK developer FreeStyleGames, which is currently working on “localized downloadable content” for the Guitar Hero brand.
