Square Makes a Bid for Tecmo

It seems more and more like this age of acquisitions continues to wage on with the latest installment being Square Enix taking out the money hat and trying to grab up Tecmo. I think Square Enix should stick to what they know best and continue to churn out Final Fantasy games that will keep their audiences entranced for years to come, just go finish FFXIII and FF Versusa and leave Tecmo alone. Although think of the potential… Tecmo Bowl + Final Fantasy = Tecmo Final Bowl Fantasy, where the players can use gunswords to gain yards and kick chocobos through the uprights.

Square Enix is seeking to take over troubled Ninja Gaiden developer Tecmo, offering to acquire a controlling interest by purchasing Tecmo stock at a 30 percent premium over the company’s August 28 closing price of 708 yen ($6.52).

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said that he has been discussing the potential acquisition with recently resigned Tecmo president Yoshimi Yasuda as well as Tecmo board chairman and current president Yasuharu Kakihara since May 2008.

Tecmo’s board of directors has until September 4 to respond to the takeover offer. Square Enix said that if the developer chooses to reject the officer, it will withdraw its offer and will not seek a buyout.

Will we see Cloud in the next Ninja Gaiden game? Or maybe a badass ninja and tons of blood in the next Final Fantasy? If so, then I’m all for it.

A cross between Square and Temco seems cool.

Square said they will fund the 200mm deal with cash from their balance sheet. No financing. Strange tactic to publicly announce a friendly take-over before its finalized. Maybe dangerous to put the target in play before its all signed. Esp in an industry which has been still recording profits in economic downturns and that has been fairly active with acquisitions as of late.
