One of the positive aspects of the PlayStation Network is that you don’t have to pay a dime to get your online gaming fix. Sony has stated they want to keep the PSN free as well as offer you a good amount of other free services.
We like to provide as many services as possible for free — we already provide our network access for gameplay for free — and the interesting thing about the network side and the Internet business is that there’s a variety of revenue sources. Not necessarily getting people to pay, but with advertising and so on.
Those are things we’re looking at, and learning how we can provide a service without people having to pay — but we still get our operation running with funding from somewhere so that we can maintain the level of quality we want.
Sounds like a plan to me. Free is good, as long as the quality is there. Sony has been making tremendous strides with the PSN to bring it up to speed. We’ll see how well this works.

hopefully revenues coming to sony from somewhere aside from just advertising. And some new original online features are always good.
Free is GOOD, anytime
I’m thinking if they could promise A LOT then maybe they could charge $10 a year for the service. However, sony has been known to promise things (home) and not release them even close to on time.
You know that not everything will be free. If they get a MMORPG, it will be associated with a subscription service. But I definitely appreciate their wanting to keep as much free as possible.
And if they do graduate to ads, please let them be ads for your own games/services, and not ads for crap I don’t want, like a new energy drink or Enzyte.

I don’t mind a subscription service, I wouldn’t even mind DLC for the MMORPG as long as it’s worth it.
