On our recent trip to the Mall of America, a gigantic mall in Minnesota, Loot Ninja came across an interesting scene. There was a pavilion of sorts promoting the Wii Fit in full effect with about a dozen or so Wiis and balance boards. It amazes me that a game like Wii Fit that has now been out on the market since May is still being promoted heavily and doing so well.
It was also interesting to see that the crowd that had assembled was full of children and their parents who really had no clue about gaming. As we sat there taking pictures of the people participating and trying out the game we could tell that no one in the crowd was a real gamer and really was amused by the novelty of the product and not the actual game.

A group of girls passing by that had to be no older than 15 were discussing how they wanted to play the hula-hoop part of the Wii Fit and weren’t even sure if they had the system. The marketing departments over at Nintendo are a bunch of geniuses; they are taking a game that is over 4 months old and positioning like the newest and best thing out. They even had a large screen up front where they were taking people out of the crowd to compete against one another.
Although this event seemed simple enough here was over a dozen staff members there to discuss the game with the crowd and get them into playing with the balance board. Wii Fit and Nintendo is becoming a marketing dream with Wii Fit water bottles, board covers, towels and other unnecessary crap that Nintendo can make a ton of money off of.
What do you think?

Write a Comment»brilliant and positive for gaming as a whole. the more gaming continues to creep its way into popular culture across age and sex boundaries, the better it is for everyone. we are rapidly approaching a time when a dude can play video games for 12 hours in his house one day and when someone else finds out, they aren’t horrified and looking at him like he has some sexless basement nerd disease… you all know that look.
Slick move for nintendo. I would consider buying a wii fit, if I didn’t already have a crap ton of peripherals in the living room.
Look at the parents on the side watching their kids having a fun wholesome time and thinking they’re getting in shape; Nintendo is sucking them in. How are you going to market Wii Fit to people who didn’t know about it? If they didn’t know about it they must not have a Wii and it’s still hard to get a Wii nowadays.
