With the noise revolving around Diablo III and Starcraft II another huge question jumps into my mind, will we ever see a Diablo or Starcraft MMO?
Right now Blizzard enjoys its time at the top of the food chain with World of Warcraft Online and its huge gamer fan base. We hear almost on a daily basis of all the follow on MMOs that are trying to be the next WoW killer, but they all fall short. The closest thing to a true WoW killer was Age of Conan and that game has all but fallen apart with its lack of quests for certain level characters and lack of end game content, players have already began canceling their accounts.
Since it looks like no one can match the power and widespread acclaim of WoW one could argue that Blizzard could out due themselves and release another MMO of their own. Perhaps one based off of their other classic franchises Diablo or Starcraft, but then they may interfere with their current WoW player’s addictions or would they?
I think that anyone that would be playing WoW would not necessarily just jump ship to SC or Diablo MMOs because of the large amount of time they have spent on their in game characters already. Also Diablo and SC MMOs could actually attract more players since they are different genres, Diablo being a dark and twisted realm and SC being set in space, these could be awesome complements to WoW.
If Blizzard were to release another MMO an argument could be made that they could make all three franchises into giants and monopolize the MMO market all together. If anyone could develop a WoW killer I think it would be Blizzard but is it time for a new champ or will they wait until WoW completely fades out to break open the emergency glass on a SC or Diablo MMO?

Being an avid WoW player since beta ‘04, this is something I have thought a lot about. The games people have talked about leaving WoW for the most have been Warhammer and the new blizzard titles, SC and Diablo III. WoW has done a lot to piss off the hardcore raider/gamer to achieve a huge subscriber base of casual players. This trend, if it continues, will keep WoW viable as long as they see fit to dedicate resources to it.
As far as lore and story goes, after the WotL expansion, as far as I can tell, there can only be 1 more which would be to kill Sargeras. Maybe it will come to that, maybe not.
I think WoW will be around for another 2 years at least and there is ample time for the competition to get this model right. But to build a game of this scale correctly, it is going to have to be done by a company that has very very deep pockets, like EA, if they want to do it right.
I have just over 200 days played on my primary WoW account (i have 3 at the moment) and I will never play another mmorpg again due to how much time and energy I have put into WoW. I think a fair amount of people feel the same.
Blizzard ultimately will have the final word on what is next for WoWs subscriber-base, not any other companies “WoW Killer”. It is all in their hands and they appear to be quite comfortable with it that way. I know I would be, ha.
A SC MMO would be definitely a WoW killer because I can picture it being 2x awesome. Maybe they might make another mmo but not off Diablo or SC. Who know? We already have a bunch of MMOs coming from other developers.
I think a SC MMO would be awesome, just cuz I LOVE the SC world, but I don’t know how they would do it. It’s not like you could have all those little quests with SC. Maybe something like a FPS MMO. But I think it would have to be much different from WoW. Diablo on the other hand could take the same steps as WoW but bring a much darker side to it. Not all happy and bright.
A new diablo mmo makes the most sense and diablo 3 is just coming out next year or so, and WoW came out after Warcraft 3… it is not crazy to think that a diablo mmo is feasible in the next 3 years. i mean, the mmo titles exist on their own so there is no reason to stop making the RTS games that share the same stories.
