If you aren’t familiar with the Criterion Collection, it’s the best of the best in terms of quality in movie releases. Some of the Criterion DVDs fetch easily over $100 on Ebay and other sites. So when it came to picking their reference Blu-Ray player, they didn’t cut any corners.
The PS3 topped their list as the best BD player out there, just as it has on many other lists. CNET uses the PS3 as their reference player as well. It’s important to note that both the Criterion Collection and CNET are using cheap HDMI cables, which work just as good as those super expensive Monster Cables you picked up at Best Buy.
I use my PS3 as my Blu-Ray and DVD player. It works great for upscaling as well. What setup are most of you using?

i am using a 12 inch black and white with a sony betamax cassette player and a set of rabbit ears for the locals
I also use the PS3 as my primary blu ray player. I have a blu ray player on my desktop also, but I have only used it to test.
I’ve never been more envious of a home theater setup as I am of scallywhop.
I use my PS3 for all my Blu titles. But I had to get the monster 120mhz cable from circuit city because my TV (Samsung LN-T5281F) is 120mhz. Once i got that cord, my picture improved noticeably.
I would still like to get a smaller new TV to watch DVDs on for the current time because I hate watching them upscaled on such a big screen, they look like ass. That is the biggest drawback to having a sick TV, regular programming is nearly unwatchable and DVDs are blah.
Hate to say it Ian, but you got ripped off with that cable. 120hz is just a setting in the TV and no BluRay player will pass signal at that rate. Most movies are encoded at 24fps (which roughly translates to 24hz). Your TV does frame doubling and other JuJu to display things at 120hz.
Any HDMI cable that is rated for HDMI 1.3 should give you the exact same quality signal. In runs less than 25ft, there’s no signal degradation with digital video or audio. A $5 cable from Monoprice would be the same thing
@ Ian,
Me 2. I got ripped off 2
I use my Sony PS3 as my blu-ray player with my Sony 52″ LCD
see i win ,i love my ps3 for blue rays and i use my 360 hd-dvd player to push the disk in
ah sorry I wasn’t clear in my post. My blu-ray picture was always fine. It was my cable/TV image that showed a noticeable benefit from the cord upgrade. that may have just been a coincidence or a crappy original cable as well, but it definitely fixed whatever was wrong. been happy with it ever since
Anybody I know with a ps3 use it as their primary blu-ray player and are very happy. The first time I saw Spiderman on blu-ray was my cousins ps3 and I was in awh.
The ps3 has always worked so well that I haven’t bothered ever trying any other blueray players. Mine is used as the media center of my living room. PS3 rules!
