Looks like Blizzard is jumping on the achievement bandwagon heavy, we had already heard that the newest expansion Wrath of the Lich King would bring achievements to the World of Warcraft, but looks like things will not stop there. Achievements will be incorporated into Starcraft II and Diablo III according to Jeff Kaplan of Blizzard.
When the new Blizzard Accounts are active, a player’s ‘WoW’ points can be added to an overall score dubbed an account holder’s “Blizzard Level. It’s basically a gamerscore. For now the points are just a ‘WoW’ character score. As we graduate to that Blizzard Account system, which is right on the horizon, it will switch over to a Blizzard Level.
I liked the idea of achievements on the Xbox 360, but now it seems that everyone is jumping onto the bandwagon. Sony is introducing a trophy system, Blizzard a Blizzard level, what next Nintendo points? I could go without achievements in my Blizzard games, but i guess it does give some replay value to these games and will give you the ability to track achievements across accounts so you can see how your friends did in different Blizzard games.

Write a Comment»Blizzard is by far my favorite game developer. Out of the total percentage of games I have played and will play, blizzard titles are about 95% of that total.
Blizzard games are like digital crack all ready. adding in these “blizzard levels” is just going to fuel the all ready problematic addictions people are developing to their games. I hate to sound like some lame parent on the news or something, but as a guild leader in wow since late 2004, I have seen first hand how these gaming addictions can destroy peoples lives. Broken marriages, college failures, lost jobs, and even eviction from apartments/homes are a few of the negative effects of gaming addictions that I am sure most of us are familiar with, especially if we are into the mmorpg genre. Blizzard was on the right path with WoW specifically by making the game much more casual friendly (at the cost of snubbing the hardcore gamer unfortunately). Adding these achievements is a step backwards, imo. I say this mainly because as soon as I read it, I had a feverish desire wishing I could get started right away to make sure my blizzard level was awesome.
must… level… blizzard level… go!
This will only bring more fun to a Blizzard game imo. I have to agree with lan, Blizzard is also one of my favorite video game developer and they have stick to PC instead of disbanding it or going multi platform. I don’t mind if we see Blizzard going multi platform with their games as long as the PC games are released first.
Mass Effect has achievements on the PC version also. I dunno. I’m not a big fan of achievements in the first place, but I’ll get them if I can.
