Gears 2 gets Linked Achievements

Gears of War 2 Screen 1
Gears of War 2 made an appearance at the Comic-Con today and some interesting news was dropped, announcing that Gears 2 would get “linked achievements”. What exactly is a “linked achievement”? Well simply put, things you achieved in the first Gears of War game will have an affect on your play through the much anticipated sequel. Cliffy B gave some examples of what he meant by linked achievements:

- Complete Act One in Gears Of War, unlock a playable Anthony Carmine in Gears of War 2
- Find 10 COG tags in Gears Of War, unlock Minh Young Kim in Gears of War 2
- Kill Raam in Gears Of War, unlock a playable Raam in Gears of War 2

This is a great way to promote players to play through the original title and promote continuity between titles. This is an interesting and innovative idea that should be incorporated into more sequels especially since there are so many sequels coming out soon. Curious what if any other “linked achievements” might get added later?

Do they mean achievements as in “360 Achievements”, because those examples just look like unlockables.

As long as the achievements gained in the first GoW have no bearing on what achievements can be gained in GoW2, it sounds cool.

However, if it turns out players can only get certain GoW2 achievements from having obtained certain achievements in GoW1, i’ll be disgusted – wouldn’t surprise me though :(

  3. That’s pretty damn cool! I guess I need to go finish Gears now…

Cool, I already have all the achievements in gears 1250/1250. So it sounds good to me.

  5. [...] Loot-Ninja.com reports that Gears 2 will include ‘linked achievements’. This means that things you’ve done in Gears 1 will unlock stuff in Gears 2. Now there’s a great idea! It’s a nice reward for loyal fans and a great incentive for newcomers to play through part 1 as well. [...]

I think that’s a novel idea, so far the achievements system hasn’t really been put to good use by enough games. I liked how in Dead Rising you were awarded stuff for achievements, and the Crackdown mini-achievements were a bit of a laugh. To me this seems like another game that will be known for doing something that seems so simple in theory with the existing achievements, that other games should follow in example.

This is good news for me since I have all the achievements for GEARS. :-)

sounds like a bunch of business men sat at the conference room and said how can we get more people to buy gears of war (1) after we release gears of war 2? … and “linked achievements” is what they came up with.

Are they retroactive? As in, I beat the game on insane already, I don’t have to do it again, do I?

This is a bright idea, finally a more rewarding way and should a time to sell more copies of GeoW since it’s on sale or it was on sale at Gamestop and othe retailers.

The should do that for the Madden games and save people the trouble of buying them. Yeah, I went there.
