Review: Tetris (iPhone)

Tetris iPhone Screen 1

Tetris has been a staple of the gaming world for years. If you’ve never played any version of the hit puzzle game, you should have your gaming card revoked. No matter what gaming platform exists, someone somewhere will make a version of Tetris. The iPhone is no different as EA has stepped up to bring everyone’s favorite block dropping game to Apple’s mobile phone.

For those of you who may have lived under a rock for the past 20 years, let me break down Tetris for you. Seven different shapes block fall with your goal to rotate and move the pieces to form horizontal lines. Once you do, that line disappears and whatever is above it drops to fill the gaps. The more lines at once, the bigger the score. You get the picture.

The iPhone version of the game is one of my favorites because of the control scheme. To rotate your pieces, you tap the left or right side of the screen. To drop the pieces, you can either slide it down slowly or flick your finger for a fast drop. You’ll pick up the simplicity and pure fun of the controls quickly and you’ll want to keep coming back. The standard Marathan mode is there where you keep going as long as you can before the screen fills up. There is also a Magic mode where you get a set number of lines to complete per level with various power-ups and such appearing as you progress through the game. It gives a nice twist to the standard gameplay.

The graphics are good for an iPhone game, but Tetris doesn’t need the be the best looker. It worked great on the original GameBoy in essentially one color and it works great here. There’s some decent background music as well.

If you’re a fan of Tetris (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), pick this one up. At $7.99, it’ll provide a ton of entertainment for your dollar. Whether you want to play for a few minutes while commuting to work or see how long you can go in Marathon Mode, this classic is well worth it on the iPhone.

Overall: Buy It

Looks like the iPhone redefines mobile gaming with less shitty quality games because of it’s specs. What’s up with the price tag, I mean $7.99 for Tetris is not a problem but the other games EA is releasing for the iPhone don’t deserve the same price tag.
