Do like words? We do here at Loot Ninja. We write a lot, so knowing some cool words to twist your brain is always a plus. Enter Scrabble, the age old table game where you are challenged to link exceptional words on a board to score points. EA now brings the classic to the iPhone, but just how well does it translate to the mobile touchscreen?
This isn’t a graphical powerhouse, even for an iPhone game. But it doesn’t need to be. The game board and tiles are clear and crisp and the menus look nice. The game has some cool sound effects when you get bonus scoring and when you place letters on the board (it sounds like it does in real life). There’sa steady track of background music playing, which can get annoying after playing for a while.

Gameplay-wise, you better be sharp. The CPU is no joke in terms of the words it creates. If your vocabulary is weak, you might be in for a shock. You’ll learn quickly, though. Soon enough, you’ll be speaking and spelling like William Shakespeare in his prime. It’s nice that the game includes an option to set your difficulty level in Custom Play, especially for younger children and teenagers whose experience with the game and word knowledge aren’t as great as the older generations. If you’re really stuck, the game features a “Best Word” option where it will play what’s best for you in that turn. You can only use this option so many times per round, so choose wisely.
If playing the CPU isn’t your thing, the game features 2-4 player Pass n’ Play where you can take turns throwing down your best words. EA has stated a WiFi play update will be coming, which should give a lot more life to the game when you’re alone.

Ultimately, the game is a good digital rendition of Scrabble. If you like Scrabble to begin with, there’s a good bit there for your $10. But if you’ve never enjoyed sitting around spelling out words, you probably stopped reading already anyway.
Verdict: Buy It (if you enjoy Scrabble)
