Review: Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 (Xbox Live Arcade)

Wolf of the Battlefield Commando 3 Screen 1

Do you remember playing the Commando games growing up? I have some fond recollections of the games. So when Capcom announced Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, I got all excited. After seeing the first gameplay videos, I had mixed reactions. Finally getting to play the game, I can say it’s fairly solid and provides a lot of fun, especially in short bursts

Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 is perfect when you don’t have a lot of time. The game is easy to pick up and play with it’s familiar dual analog controls. The left stick is used for movement while the right stick is used for 360-degree firing of your weapon. The action is fast and the game can be completed in a very short amount of time (I finished in just under an hour). Commando 3 is great when you have a few minutes to kill but don’t want to fire up a long game.

The graphics looks great in Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. There is a nice cell shaded look to everything, very similar to Capcom’s previous XBLA release, Rocketmen. Enemies, environments, and vehicles all look good. The sound is of the game is okay, but nothing to rave about. Each weapon has a slightly different rat-a-tat firing, but otherwise it’s fairly bland. You’ll hear the same explosion sound over and over.

A nice online co-op mode is available where you and one or two friends can rock through the game together, which is a very nice touch. The only downside here is that you share lives among yourselves. If one of your friends tries to be Rambo and keeps dying, you’ll end up restarting the level or section quite a few times. That aside, Commando 3 is a lot of fun with friends.

The gameplay can get repetitive and there is very little story, as is expected with this style game. The fast-paced action and online co-op definitely make up for it, though. Because of the short play time, I wish it would have been priced a little lower than 800 Microsoft Points. If this is your style game, definitely pick up Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. The demo is free, so if you don’t at least play that, you’re cheating yourself.

Overall: 7 out of 10

Damn sharing lives with your teammate? I guess they really wanted people to work as a real team.. I’m not a fan of tanks, but this game got my vote for a demo.

And sharing lives isn’t new. a lot of old arcade games shared lives and continues. The most recent being Time Crisis 4.
