It’s been a full 24 hours since the new firmware 2.40 was pulled from the update servers. We heard from Sony yesterday that they were looking into the issue, but that’s about it. A post on PlayStation.Blog saying the same was put up yesterday around 7:30pm ET. Nothing else has been said. What’s the deal?
We contacted Sony and have yet to hear back. It seems that they don’t want to comment on just what’s going on here, which leads me to believe they really aren’t sure what’s causing the issues. While a huge majority of people had no problems when installing v2.40, a few got bricked consoles (wouldn’t turn on, gave errors, etc.). It seems the problem lies somewhere in the install process.
Hopefully Sony drops word soon. I have a feeling the internet will go into an uproar when they release the PlayStation Store update and still don’t have a fix or any word about the firmware. We’ll keep you posted.
[Update] I just spoke with Jeff Rubenstein at Sony. He confirmed they are still working on the firmware.
We’re still examining the cause of the problem. We’ll announce as soon as we are ready to resume the system version update.
[Update 2] We received a link to the exact file that the PS3 checks for updates. This file still indicates version 2.36 as the current version. Check it out.

Write a Comment»First step of the 3 gone wrong. I wonder how do they test everything to make sure a firmware is ready to go out. Just like with the problem with the double layered disc SSBB had with older Wii consoles. I think firmwares and such should be tested on a variety of PS3s not just on the ones that are new out of the box.
“The 2.4 firmware for the PS3 has been put back onto the servers so download it if you have not done so yet. Hopefully this means they got most of the problems fixed and running fine!!!”

Via a PS3 system I just tried, and also nostars, neither of us sees the 2.40 update
Hmm, a few people are reporting that too and some are not I’m perplexed. And some say their’s still say 2.36, must be a prank lmao.
Yeah, and I was called a liar for posting this story on N4G. Even though I did actually speak with Jeff Rubenstein, Sony’s Community Manager, about the status of the firmware.
Don’t mind N4G there really are a bunch of sensitive fan boys that get really defensive I swear. I try to avoid posting as much on there because it always make someone get their panties in a bunch over someone’s mere opinion, but with that being said there are some really cool people, lol.
We waited this long for 2.4, I guess i can wait another day or so.
8:48am and it’s still unavailable.
nostars, I got a present for ya:

Thats 2.40. I uploaded 2.40 at the request of another friend. Instructions on how to do a manual update are on the official sony system update site:

Also, as a reminder. There is a small chance you may experience issues I guess. That IS the official release, so it’s Sony’s fault if you do. Its likely that you won’t, but since I’m a nice guy I just wanna warn you first.
Booooo. 5:43pm and it’s still a no show.
Nostars, Did you see my post?
Oh snap, no I hadn’t. Thanks man.
Doc, you da man. I installed it and it works fine. My PSN id is nostars, send me a friend invite sometime.
Glad I could help out.
