I just spoke with Jeff Rubenstein over at Sony. Apparently the issues with firmware 2.40 are more widespread than we originally thought. Jeff wouldn’t confirm any numbers to me, but gave me this official statement:
Looking into it right now and will work with those customers directly to address any issues they may be experiencing.
I’m trying to get more information from him, but he’s not sharing. I think Sony is in lockdown mode trying to figure this one out. More as it develops…
[Update] I asked Jeff if a new firmware version would be issued and he didn’t want to comment. So even if 2.40 is working for you, a new update may be in store.

I have both the 2.36 and 2.40 updates downloaded to my computer. I wonder if you can revert the FW updates? i bet no. I could upload them if anybody wants.

I installed 2.4 this morning on my 60 gig without incident but haven’t had a chance to test any features or play anything yet. Now I’m afraid to try though! I think I’ll leave my PS3 off until the inevitable 2.41 patch. Man, Sony really needs to hire Western software/networking engineers as they are completely clueless in that department.
There’s probably a slim chance that you”ll get your stuff back after unbricking your PS3. What a bad situation this is..
how do you unbrick your PS3 and what does it mean if your PS3 gets bricked?
It has to do with installation. Aslong as it installed without any problems, you should be fine. Sony hasn’t heard about any problems with firmware 2.40 after installation. I downloaded it last night, and have been playing around with all the features today without any problems.
@CJ – You’re right. Sony confirmed this as well. If the firmware installs, you’re golden.
@Str8Nasty – If the PS3 is bricked, it’s essentially dead. Call Sony. They’re going to fix/replace anything that got busted by the update.
I guess I’m glad I didn’t install it. I’ll do it if it’s on when I get home tonight.
Gotta give Sony credit though, they took it down fairly quick after finding out there was a problem.
I was curious why my update said 2.36? It was already off the server by 6pm EST when I started my update.
Yeah, I sent Matt a few messages when the same happened to me. he told me they had pulled it.
@Str8nasty bricking a system really means to break it so yeah it’s dead and a real burden. It’s really hard to unbrick something on your own and I doubt a firmware will save this so people will have to send their system into Sony and who knows when it”ll come back. Seeing how the situation is I think Sony will try their best to fix the system and send it back to the owners asap.
[...] been a full 24 hours since the new firmware 2.40 was pulled from the update servers. We heard from Sony yesterday that they were looking into the issue, but that’s about it. A post on PlayStation.Blog saying [...]
damn, well then good think sony did pull it after a little bit or else they wouldve had a shit load of PS3s to fix..
I am still sitting on 2.36, no 2.40 update is coming up when I look for the update. I guess I cna wait, if I brick my PS3 I would be one unhappy camper!
@Al, Same here, still no update.
@Doc’s link
Look at the rating on that post haha.
Well it’s not what people want to hear, but still, it has a 3.02/5. That’s better than some games.
