Game-changing? That's a pretty bold statement by Microsoft. Now they have something to live up to.

I mentioned HD-DVD to refer to the portion of the DVD format that's slumping (aka the format war), not it's entirety. Of course it has to do with something, is it not part of the DVD format?

Prices of DVD movies are being dropped, yes because it will be the last stock that will be sold until Blu-Ray becomes the alternative choice. So how will that do for a long long time for DVD when it comes to Blu-Ray as the only choice of format to buy for your movies? That's what I meant when I said DVDs are being discontinued, HD-DVDs to be exact.

DVD isn't going anywhere? Part of it has, HD-DVD -- to the grave, you said it yourself.

Other than that MS is still using DVD for it's games.

Before anyone gets too carried away with declarations about staying somewhere i'm pretty sure the world has heard the same thing about eight-track, reel to reel, vinyl, vhs, disco and jimmy hoffa. Which all incidently is most likely residing in boxes in various attics and basements around the world.

LOL how did you drag HDDVD back from the dead? what does that have to do with anything? And DVD sales being discontinued? WTF? Thats like if nintendo stopped making Wii's cause they are selling too many.

And you kinda overlooked something. You say DVD prices being dropped? Thats the EXACT reason more DVDs will be sold than Bluray for a LONG LONG time. Add to the fact it coast $400 to go Blu and $30 a pop for a disc. LOL!

DVD isn't going ANYWHERE.

@Doc
How will DVD stay alive for a LONG when prices of DVDs are being dropped and discontinued? Even the Xbox HD DVD player was on sale of more than 50%.

Read up.

"However, Toshiba used aggressive pricing to attempt to influence consumers to support the HD-DVD format. Then, the format war went largely in Blu-Ray's favor after the largest movie studio supporting HD DVD, Warner Brothers, decided to abandon releasing films on HD-DVD in January 2008. Shortly thereafter, several major North American rental services and retailers announced the exclusive support for Blu-ray products in February 2008. On 19 February 2008, Toshiba made an official announcement that it will no longer develop or manufacture HD-DVD players and recorders."

I think we both can agree DVD's are not going away for a LONG time. The market for DVD's is still 10x that of bluray. DVD sales are at a all time high. Bluray as only captured the enthusiast market. And because it'll take years to even see a real gain, there will probably already be a new format come out. If its cheaper than bluray...... RIP bluray.

@Doc - If you look at same time data for DVD and BluRay, BluRay actually has a higher adoption rate over the same period. People are talking about it.

RE5 time exclusive would change the game. not only that, but a leaked Kmart ad shows the 360 PRO for $299. A $50 price drop. If sony cant afford a price drop because of the expensive blu-ray this will be M$ season. Ya know, if they drop the price of PS3, they basically have to drop a whole line of stand alone blu ray players or people will figure out buying a stand alone player is a waste of money. People are not dumb. This puts the PS3 in a awkard spot. As the flag carrier for blu ray. And blu ray sales are still crap and NOBODY I know even talks about blu ray.

Game changing? You need something bigger and better than Gears, Halo, GTA, MGS to be game changing.
