Review: Lego Indiana Jones - The Original Adventures (Xbox 360)

Lego Indiana Jones Screen 1

Growing up, I was a huge fan of Legos. I would always get in trouble for putting them in sexually suggestive positions. Hey, if the king of the castle wanted to show his dominance to a lowly serf, well, thats not my place to stop him. Outside of perverted, plastic puppet shows, Legos are now back in the mainstream and the latest Lego masterpiece is the Adventures of Indiana Jones. Fans of this series span generations and this game does the same. Young and old alike will spend hours as you relive your favorite moments from the trilogy.

Lego Indiana Jones Screen 2

Fans of Lego Star Wars will feel right at home and will be surprised by some new additions and new fans will be instantly hooked. The great thing about the Lego series of games is that you know exactly what you are going to get: A fun adventure that is not so much about finishing the story, its the good times you have while playing through it. Don’t expect mind blowing graphics here. The game is very polished and very simple. The character models look amazing, but they do look like Legos, which are themselves simplified character models. Most of the environments are good, but attention was spent on the characters and not on the background as much as most would have liked.  In some occasions, you will notice screen tearing, especially when a lot is happening on-screen.

The gameplay has improved somewhat, but gameplay was never an issue. You can now pick up weapons left behind, interact with NPCs, and puzzles are more prevalent. In Lego Star Wars, you almost always had a weapon, be it a light saber, blaster, etc. In Indy, you often have you fists, which can be annoying because your enemies all have guns, rocket launchers, spears, and so forth. You have infinite lives, but you lose studs when you die.  Not much else is changed, but character AI seems a little better.

What is awesome about Lego games is the re-playability. There are a ton of unlocks. A ton. Besides characters, you need to find all artifacts to unlock secret missions you can get in the museum of Barnett College( the Cantina’s equivalent). You need to replay levels with characters with different powers to do find all the artifacts, which makes it well worth it to play through over and over. There are a ton of Easter eggs to find and if you look hard enough, you will find Star Wars characters trapped.

Lego Indiana Jones is a great installment in the series and has once again made gamers smile. The game has improved somewhat but glaring issues like a fixed camera angle, respawning over cliffs, and some overall repetitiveness make the game very good, just not great. Any fan of the series has to play Indy. If you like searching for secrets and unlocking items, this is worth buying. If you just want to play through the stories, rent this game immediately. It will quench your Lego appetite until Lego Batman comes out this fall.

Overall 8 of 10
