Prizefighter Developer Conference Call

Prizefighter Screen 1

Today I spent a bit of time on a conference call with Matthew Seymour, Executive Producer on 2K Sports’ upcoming boxing title, Don King Presents: Prizefighter. The first bit of the call discussed the game, then it turned into a confusing rant from the mouths of Don King and Larry Holmes. I spent half the time laughing because I had no idea what they were saying and what was going on.

Anyway, let’s get to the game. There is plenty of competition in the boxing arena with the Fight Night series, but Prizefighter looks to stand out by offering a huge, dramatic experience in the career mode. In a move never been done before, 2K is telling your story through a sports documentary centered around your character. In what should take about 15 hours to complete, real video will discuss your character’s career from the perspective of Don King, cut men, girlfriends, etc. Sounds terrific to me.

If career modes aren’t your thing, Prizefighter has a great exhibition mode featuring forty fighters, ten of which are boxing legends, including Larry Holmes. In the multiplayer realm, there is a Fighter Club area where you can battle with up to eight people to find out who is the best pound-for-pound boxer. Each fight will net you points based on your performance and whoever ends up with the most points wins. 2K will also be hosting single elimination tournaments consisting of eight fighters each. They estimate that most of the hardcore gamers will spend their online time with the tournaments. You can also use up to five customized characters online in different weight classes that will be tracked in the game’s various leaderboards.

Development began by hearing a lot of Don King’s stories, and he can definitely tell some stories. From a development perspective, the hardest part was narrowing all of the stories down to get the best moments possible for the game’s career mode.

After the initial questions with Matthew Seymour, things made a turn to confusion as Don King starting going off in every direction you can imagine. Since I was insanely confused, I’ll post the full audio later just so you can listen to how everything went down.

Overall, the game sounds like it’s going to be very good, especially offline with the career mode. We’ll have some hands on time soon, so check back for our impressions and review.

Girlfriends should be funny, similar to Def Jam game. I vote for online belts that you can defend.
