We’re trying to get a handle on just how widespread the issues are with Grand Theft Auto IV. Reports are flooding our tip box of freezing issues on both consoles, online issues on the PS3, bugs in the game, etc. We’re not turning this into any kind of fanboy fest, so this is a blanket poll. No 360 or PS3 choices, it’s just yes or no. Personally, I’m about 3 hours into single player on PS3 (haven’t tried multiplayer yet) and haven’t experienced any issues.
So, let us know how your time in Liberty City is going. Is it smooth sailing or are there a lot of bumps in the road?
[Update] We’re going to put together the results and send them over to Rockstar. See if we can’t help them out in seeing how widespread the problem may be.

Write a Comment»Luanch PS3 60gb, 25mb free, locks up EVERYTIME. So dissapointed with RockStar on this. Even exchanged the game and re-installed 3 more times with the same result. Should probably hold some kind of GTA IV burning at the stake demo for all those Rockstar testers that f*cked the dog instead of testing their product. Shame on you Rockstar for forgetting your Sony fathers. First a $40 million dollar payoff from M$, now crappy teasting on Sony’s platform. Looks like they’re getting ready to be owned by EA as this is their style as well. This industry is making me sick. (as if anyone cares)

60 GB launch PS3, no lockups so far. I’m about 8% finished with the game so hopefully I’ll have continued good luck.
The main frustrating issues I have been experiencing is to do with the online multiplayer on the PS3. Not once have I been able to connect but will be trying again once I get home. Mine is a 40Gb but have modded the HDD to a 120Gb
I have only experienced one freeze which was quite major and occurred only after about 6hrs straight of playing and lasted for a couple of minutes but after this there has been no problems.
All in all this is a fantastic game and functionality wise has set the benchmark really hight for future releases.
My only wish is that R* come through with this PS3 exclusive I keep hearing whispers about.
Iam so glad I have not had any problems yet and Iam running a 60 GB ps3. Rock star can’t model characters for shit have you guys seen how fake they look in the cut scenes. Like take a look at the strippers tits they dont have any physics at all? Wtf are you people lazy you want us to belive this game is real but you dont even have simple boob physics. Last time I checked a ps2 could emulate boob physics with ease? So whats the deal with them not even being in the cut scenes? Thats only one example, just look through out any one of those cut scenes and you will see at least one of the characters some how go through objects, hold things wrong, look unnatural, or poorly done. Like iam beginning to think rockstar is pretty lazy when it comes to details that make the environment look believable and not retarded. I may be picky but this is supposed to be next generation video games not shitty ass no titty physics last gen. Hell come to think of it a ton of games last gen had better titty physics. Iam just saying its little things like that where this game looks crappy.
The poll should be a little more specific on single player vs multiplayer. I have played single player for around 5 hours in one session with no problems at all on my 80gb ps3. I have yet to play one multiplayer game as it says cannot connect to game provider or something like that. I am not too worried since SP is keeping me very entertained for now. I hope this trend doesn’t continue with ps3 devs… I don’t want to regret my purchase. I had an xbox 360 but was constantly afraid of it dying and made me think and worry about how long I was playing it… with ps3 we get shafted by most multi-system games.
Total BS! 60gb launch console. So far the game is 100% unplayable. I’ve reinstalled constantly over the past two days and even got a replacement disc from gamestop.
PLEASE ROCKSTAR / SONY FIX THIS!!! I just want to play my new game.
Rocksteady, How much freespace do you have? Also did you backup your ps3, format the hd and try again?
no problems as of yet, with 40gb ps3 purchased a few months ago. I’ve noticed a lot of people on other forums saying that they are having big problems, but with only a few mb free on their hard disk - maybe thats not helping things? 25mb free doesn’t sound like much, and i know if my pc or mac is running with 25mb free it wont work either! Free up a gig or two and try again? Just a suggestion! x
60 GB launch PS3… after 4 hours I’ve had one freeze while driving the car around through an intersection. Lasted about 5 seconds but scared the bejesus out of me. Haven’t been able to connect to multiplayer.
60GB post launch PS3. Locked up 3 times in 20 minutes. Turned off main power (on the back) for about 15 minutes then oriented vertically. No lock ups since (about 3 hours). It has hiccuped (almost frozen) a couple of times since, but not total lockup. I’m not sure if either step actually did something, or if it just happened not to lock up yet (again). Better than nothing, though!
Not a single problem yet. I have a 60GB PS3. I don’t know if it’s the original. I bought it January 2007. Is that considered the original or is original the ones that shipped on day one?
I installed the game in a few minutes with no problem. I played a little while. I was able to save in the apartment. I went outside and caused some mayhem for a while. Got shot, beat people up, stole cars, you know, regular mayhem. Then I quit the game. I had no freezes. No lockups of any kind.
I may be an idiot but PS3 version has multiplayer online and XBOX360 does not until fall right?!? Havent bought GTA yet…
AD, I think you have it backward. The 360 multiplayer features appear to be working fine. I accidentally went into multiplayer mode on the 360 once. Not sure if the PS3’s online GTA 4 functionality is working yet. Good luck.
Launch 20 gig ps3 upgraded to a 350 gig hdd, lockups, freezes, craptastic. That’s what this is. I am more upset that it seems the only fix so far is to get a new system, and they don’t do the 20 anymore. It really makes me mad that I paid 500 bucks to sony and 100 to Rockstar (got the se), and it’s doing this. I don’t know who the hell is at fault, but seriously. This is just plain wrong.
40GB PS3 - Zero Issues
24game hours so far, 33% complete, zero lockups. Sorry 60GB users. Runs like molten butter for me. I’m showing 720p despite reports. Plot is great, thank you Rockstar, worth the wait, not worth ganking someone over though. Online is crazy fun, zero hiccups so far. Much respect.
Guys, over 2 million copies have shipped worldwide. I know it sucks but there are bound to be a few bugs to work out of a game that has been released for ONE FRIGGIN DAY that is trying to be used on 2 million different consoles all over the world. Rockstar has always done right by their customers…I expect they are working overtime to try and fix this.
I have the xbox 360 and played it all of tuesday night and most of the afternoon on Wednsday. Woke up Thursday and wanted to play some before class and it just freezes on the title screen. Jesus why has it become standard in this industry to fix the bugs after the release and not before they become a problem?
@ AD - Both have online modes now, PS3 has been having some issues as of right now, but both have the modes built in. The 360 will be getting exclusive DLC in the summer though that the PS3 may not get.
@jake- I understand dude, I totally do. It’s just frustrating to those of us that it is happening to, ya know? Same time though, I remember that Bioshock started freezing when that one patch came out, and I had to clear the cache on the 360…I wish there was a way to monitor how much memory is supposed to be cached, then we wouldn’t have this problem. Oh well, like you said, they are probably working on it all night and day, so I have pretty much no worries. Just bad first impressions
I really wanted to do the whole “key to the city contest” that Rockstar was doing, but now it’s just going to be damn near impossible. Online though is non-existent for me too…it freezes every time I get to the loading screen. Oh well, I thought maybe this would be the game to get me away from wow for awhile, but it’s looking grim at the moment.
@kiddie I understand yours and everyone’s else frustration as well…it’s a huge kick in the teeth to pay money and not be able to use it. I just get mad at people that freak out without understanding how difficult and ridiculously complicated programming is. But best of luck to you and everyone else and let’s keep our fingers crossed that Rockstar comes up with a fix soon.

I can understand if they don’t. It would be cool if they did, but whatever. Not getting a key isn’t gonna ruin my life, lol. Oh, and jake, yeah dude, programming is nuts, lol…that’s why I stayed away from it. Can you imagine if this all re-routes to one guy’s line of code? I would not like to be that guy at all. hanks guys. I know there is nothing to get mad about, we really don’t know who exactly is at fault. Could be that sony put out a few crap consoles, and it’s not rockstar’s fault at all. I suppose until we all know though, I am stuck WoWin’ it up for a while longer. Let’s hope this all ends well.

i have 80 gb ntsc-j ps3 and pal gta4 and ı have problem.. game lock up sometimes..
I have a PS3 80gb & went through 2 copies of that P.O.S b4 throwing in the towel and taking it back.Man,F**K ROCKSTAR GAMES!!!
