UFC 83 Serra versus St. Pierre Review

UFC 83
As some of you may have already heard I had the opportunity to check out UFC 83 Live in Montreal, which was the showcase for the big rematch between Matt “The Terror” Serra and George “Rush” St. Pierre. This was actually my first Live UFC event I have ever been to so the expectations were very high and I have to say that I have been a big UFC fan for a while and watched many events on pay per view, but Live in an arena is un-matched!

The Canadian fans are a lively group and will cheer as loud as they can at any given time, to the point where you can hear them in the restrooms. As this card was full of Canadian born UFC athletes, this was one loud event.

Some spoilers after the jump, so readers beware if you have not seen the matches yet.

The Main events began with Mac Danzig crushing his opponent with a devastating knee that cut him open and made him seem as if he were crying blood out of his face. Brutal shots taken, Mac looked dominant.

Michael Bisping versus Charles McCarthy, Bisping dropped to 185 pounds and dominated McCarthy in his new weight class. The bout ended with Bisping pummeling McCarthy with knees and punches, causing him to not be able to continue with the fight.

Nate Quarry versus Kalib Starnes made a UFC record for the first 30 - 24 victory without scoring a take-down or submission. Kalib ran from Quarry the entire match, which led to a huge amount of boos and chants from his own Canadian fans. Quarry wins and delivers the speech from Rocky IV, pretty funny stuff.

Rich Franklin versus Travis Lutter was next. Many thought that if Lutter got Franklin to the ground this match would end via submission and Lutter got him to the matt, but the outcome was different than expected. Franklin managed to escape an arm bar and then proceeded to pound out Lutter, who seemed visibly gassed after the submission attempts.

The main event was deafening, with GSP versus Serra being the reason for many fans showing up in Montreal. This is a huge match for the UFC as it is it’s first match in Canada and it sold out with 20,000 plus fans packing the Bell Center. GSP came in to a multitude of cheers as Serra came into the exact opposite. GSP took Serra down within the first ten seconds of the first round and just began imposing his will on Serra. The match was very one sided and ended with GSP raining knees into Serra’s ribs! The referee stopped the match and Canada saw it’s very own son win the Welterweight Championship in front of his own hometown.

Awesome event and UFC pay per view to catch, even the dark matches were great to watch!

I will have more pictures in the Loot Ninja Forums if you would like to check those out.

This was a great PPV. GSP was in control the entire match, although I still think the stoppage was a tad premature.
