What to Expect from the PlayStation Network This Year

Want to know what’s in store for the PlayStation Network this year? You’re not alone, and Sony hears you. Peter Dille, Senior Vice President for Marketing and the PlayStation Network dropped a bunch of information over at PlayStation.Blog.

Along with some more PSN games, we can expect a media download service sometime this year.

Ultimately the goal of the PLAYSTATION Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want.

I can only hope that Sony makes this so you can transfer purchased items to your PSP and possibly your PC. That’s one of the biggest issues I see with media downloads right now. If I buy something, I want to be able to watch it where and when I see fit.

We can also expect to see in-game XMB access this summer “among other community-related services”. Dille also references “accomplishments”, so I would expect some sort of achievement system coming soon. It looks like Sony is pulling out all the stops to close the gap between the PSN and Xbox Live.

Finally, PlayStation Cards will be hitting retailers very soon. If you don’t have a credit card or don’t want to enter it into the PlayStation Network, you’ll be able to buy prepaid cards to put money into your account.

Only time will tell how well the PSN ends up performing. I think there’s a lot of potential there and Sony looks to be moving in the right direction with everything.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Yeah, I don’t like having only two options with digital downloads (watch it on that device or delete it). Being able to port it to another device or stream it to another device would definitely make the digital download service more versatile. Plus, I like having a physical copy of anything I pay cash money for (like Warhawk).
