I got my copy of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue for the PS3 today. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this title for a while, as I’ve been a huge fan of the series and racing games in general. So when I put the game in my PS3, I was more than ready to race. Here’s a breakdown of what happened:
- 9:24pm - Loaded the game, started the install process
- 9:37pm - Install ended (13 minutes total, using 5349MB)
- 9:38pm - Began downloading the game update
- 9:42pm - Error occurred during download, had to start over
- 9:44pm - Began downloading the game update… again
- 9:51pm - Update finished, needed to hold the PS button to quit the game
- 9:52pm - Restart game, going through menus
- 9:53pm - Begin car shopping (you have to buy a car first with the 35k credits you have before you can race)
- 10:01pm - Bought car after looking for a while for what I can afford (settled on Mazda RX-8)
- 10:07pm - Finally finished first single player race (2:52 total race time)
So as you can see, if you get the Blu-Ray version of the game, it’s going to take you an absurd amount of time sitting there doing nothing waiting to actually play the game. Seriously, this is just ridiculous. It took 40 minutes before I was able to actually play the game.
I’m very disappointed in this aspect of the game. A lot of casual gamers are going to get royally pissed the fuck off when they encounter this scenario with the retail version of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. I’d also like to point out that the back of the box says “Required hard disk space: At least 5121 KB”, which is a long ways off from the more than 5GB install needed for the game. Disappointing, Sony. Disappointing.
On a brighter note, the gameplay and graphics are phenominal. Expect a full review early next week.

Write a Comment»*sigh* I already know what my first gripe is gonna be when I get the PS3 MGS4 bundle June 12th. MGS4 will prolly take an hour to get to the start screen.
WTF good is a 50GB blu-ray if I gotta install GB’s of data from various games to HDD? I know the HDD is swappable for a bigger one, and while cool I shouldn’t fucking need to. But if this truly is a 10 year console, there’s no way your not gonna have to deal with it.
Maybe I’ll just borrow someone’s 360 by then and play GTA 4 while the PS3 installs shit.
Look at the bright side buddy.. imagine those of us who bought the Japanese version. We have gone through 2 super large updates, and 2 minor updates. GT5P ate almost 8gb of my hdd space.. but i’m loving the game still
is the Official GT wheel out? cause that would be pretty sweet.
also does any usb wheel work? I got one that has hookups for USB, PS2, and Xbox. Would rule if I could use it.
Now if you could use the Logitech G25:

that would be sex
Wow,talk about b!tching over nothing.Crying about waiting less than an hour to play a game?Maybe you need to get back to your Hobby Book and look up something else, like Knitting for example.Because if you’re shedding tears over 40 mins of wait-time to play a game that you have in your possession and will STAY in your possession, then you might commit suicide when you realize that after waiting 18 hours in a freezing corner outside GameStop, your reserved copy of one of the biggest games of the year has been sold.
Let me know if you’ll need a box of Kleenex when Home is available for download.
The author of this article needs to get over it. This is a simulator that is like wiping your butt with silk. The hard drive install is good since it is fast. I don’t know if you guys remember, but when the PS3 was announced everyone was “hyped” that the hard drive was there for game installs that would make for fast games. Now, people complain because they have the memory and aptitude of a fly. Just install the game, relax, enjoy picking your car, get ready, and eat it up. Otherwise, stop posting dumb articles.
I blame Sony for not thinking ahead and installing something better than a 2X BDrom. The one drawback of the BDrom has been the data transfer rate. The only way around it is through an install. I can live with the install, just do it when something is on TV, sit back, have a beer.
I totally agree with johnny.. Stop whining about games and start playing them. What u fail to realize is that your ps3 is a 10 year machine because it will last 10 years (Unlike a 360) because once its installed to the HD its using the Blu Ray drive less therefore expanding its life cycle.
You could always have your games on 6 discs like the 360s Blue Dragon if you would prefer???
Stop moaning and just enjoy gaming !!!!
@Soundmastah
Good call on waiting overnight for games
