There is a general discontent with downloadable content from gamers nowadays. More frequently than not, its an attempt from a developer to grab a few extra bucks for content that probably should been packaged with the original release but withheld for the aforementioned reason. The Variety Map Pack for COD4 on the Xbox 360 (the PS3 version is identical, have not played it yet) does not meet that criteria. Activision’s add-on brings gamers four new and totally different maps to further expand their already record breaking multiplayer. Furthermore, each map also seems like it was designed for a specific game type and that adds to the replayability even more.
The first map, Chinatown, is a complete rehash of Carentan from COD1 and 2. That’s where the similarities end. Though the maps’ skeleton remains, its skin has been completely redone. From DVD shops to markets to empty apartments, few maps give the frenzied feel that Chinatown can. There are strategically placed gun turrets as well which add to the overall wildness of the map.
The next map, Creek, is a wide open type level which is best played with a Sniper with the Overkill perk added to allow you to carry a secondary weapon other than a pistol. There is a huge ravine split down the middle which can be a choke point if an enemy team is stuck there. You need to use your stealth skills because if you blindly walk out in the open, you won’t last long. There is a small network of caves that allows you to sneak from either side, but watch out for enemies waiting above and lobbing grenades in. This is a Sniper’s paradise. Air strikes and choppers will create a huge advantage in this open space.
The third map, Broadcast, is taken right out of the campaign. Its an actual level that is used in the story and it makes for a hellish fight in multiplayer. The map is an office building turned makeshift TV station with a decent sized surrounding courtyard. This map is all about finding a good spot and staying there. Players will sit atop the roof or adjacent house and pick off those who wildly run about. Bring plenty of ammo and grenades because clashes in the hallways are very frequent. One good caveat is that an air strike here is not too effective to the majority of indoor fighting.
The final map, Killhouse, seems eerily familiar to the one from Rainbow Six. Its is now only in Team Tactical and Cage Match. It is way too small for a full 8v8 game. Instead of running around with guns blazing, its best to slowly maneuver and sneak up on an opponent for a silenced kill. Imagine an indoor training room like the Boat in the Campaign, but a house, not a boat. Then it would be called Killboat.
Anyone who owns the early release of the game, spend the 10 bucks and buy the maps. This adds more diversity to an already stellar game.
Overall: Buy it right now
