Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2008 - Book Review

Guinness Gamers Edition

Yeah I know we don’t do many book reviews here, since typically the only reading we like to do at Loot Ninja is in the text of an RPG, but this book caught my eye so I thought I would give you guys some thoughts on it. The Guinness World Records is a pretty prestigious thing to hold, so seeing a Gamer’s Edition is a welcome thing, looks like games continue to be taken serious even by the folks at Guinness.

The book not only has records for fastest time to beat certain games and high scores, but also gives you a time line of video games in general, which is very cool. The book gives you a view into the different styles of games, ranging from shooter to MMORPG and also focuses in on certain titles that have made big impacts in gaming. There are excerpts on Metroid, Halo, Gears of War and even the top Arcade games.

Aside form the Record Breaking High Scores, Top 100 Arcade titles, Record Breaking Games and the overview and history of the gaming hardware, there are some great photos in this edition as well. There are some great shots of old titles and systems that you may not be able to see anywhere else except in this book. There are also some great facts scattered throughout the books that will make you think wow, like: The original US release of Metroid was the first major Western game to use a password system to save progress or that Mortal Kombat was the first game to feature a secret character. Reptile.

The book is impressive and a good read, especially if you keep it in the bathroom for those quiet times. There are a ton of fun, cool and interesting facts and information jammed into this 250 page edition, which some may call the Gamer’s Bible.

Did you ever want to know: What’s the fastest time to complete a level in Halo? or What the best-selling video game of all time was? Or even who the youngest and oldest gamers are? Then pick this new book up and find out.

Overall: 8 of 10 (ok this scale is more for video games but it is a good book to read)
