I have to tell you that there is an utter and constant lack of nudity in video games. Why can’t I play a mature rated game and see some gratuitous breasts walk by? The first major game to incorporate any kind of mature content was God of War with the mini game where you had sex and got extra Red orbs. GTA tried to have it incorporated into their games, but was reduced to calling a hooker over to your car and driving to a shaded area where the car just jumped up and down.
Since majority of the video game players of the world are over 18, putting in some sex or just random nudity shouldn’t be a problem. Don’t we have a fully robust ESRB system where games are clearly marked as Mature or Adult only? I can see people just coming out of the woodworks to complain that there is nudity in a game and that a child might be able to see some tits before his nuts have dropped, but again isn’t that why games are rated? What other purpose do the small letters in the corner of games boxes serve?
I think there should be more Mature games and someone should try to release or market an Adults only game. I am not talking about porn on your Xbox 360, although that could lead to some interesting achievements! Have a threesome get 50 gamerpoints, go ATM get 100 gamer points! A game like Leisure Suit Larry could push the envelope and provide some seriously funny and interesting gameplay, but I can guarantee that it will be gimped out due to the fact that no one wants to rock the boat. I have great fears that the next Leisure Suit Larry will be reduced to a bunch of shitty mini-games and the only thing you will get ot see is a pixelated boob and perhaps a thong. I think a developer needs to go big and just get full frontal out there on a console, show bush or go home.
I think there should be a mainstream AO game introduced into the market. It would catch so much heat from the conservative soccer moms, but would sell like hotcakes. The average gamer is not a kid anymore, it is an adult typically in their 20’s kicking back with some beers and playing some games. Who wouldn’t want to have an AO game to enjoy, as long as it is done well and doesn’t suck a nut like Night Trap. There would be outrage at first, the same as there was when GTA first hit the scene, but people would grow to accept it and all the publicity from the TV and news would quickly sky rocket it to new heights.
How great would it have been if in Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, the counter terrorist units storm a strip club? Just picture yourself peeking around a corner and having a huge pair of breasts running your way! Or walking into the club and putting your thermal goggles on and seeing a guy catching a BJ in the back room while searching for terrorists. We are seeing more explicit language coming into games, but more as random chatter from the enemy AI. How about incorporating it right into the plot?
Why not try to make a realistic game? Make a game with foul language and sex, many would run out to buy it. I can almost envision the forum posts now… just beat this game and the ending had the main character giving his female counterpart a Samoan Pile Driver! Or, at the end of the third act you see two lesbians going at it and then you give one of them the Shocker! Now that is a lofty goal and a reason to finish a game!

Line of the month so far.
Great post… great post
Maybe you need a girlfriend -___-
excellent post. I think it is ridiculous that video games are discriminated against while other mediums such as film or music get little to no heat in regards to their exposure to “adult themes”. Most video gamers are older now, I started in the late nintendo ages and am now in my 20’s. There is a market for Mature and AO games. It’s ridiculous that in a “free nation” game developers have to censor their works.
All you have to do is go to Japan and check out some of the games there lol. I think there is one game called Battle Raper or something like that where it is basically DOA4 - clothes.
Normally I would agree. BUT, Hollywood proved that relaxing the rules on nudity only serve to hurt the quality of film making. Replace a great script with a OK script and a bunch of nudity, crappy movie. Replace great acting with a hot chick, you get Jessica Alba. It’s a vicious cycle. Now instead of movies like Aliens (great movie, cool plot, great action, just enough gore and violence, no nudity), we get Hostel(ok movie, lots of violence, gore, nudity, and almost zero story).
So what would happen in video games? Replace a great story with a OK story and a nude scene. Now what would’ve been a good game is relegated to being eye candy for 14-year olds who wouldn’t know how to please a woman. And a game that might’ve been worth a $60 purchase is now little more than a rental because we all know the target audience.
Then again, Heavenly Sword would’ve been a lot better if the main character were naked throughout…

Battle Raper sounds fun.
Alright for you wanting AO but at least be fair in your demands and go for both sides. Not something with just lesbians and having male players pleased as they see it but having the rest go “well this is boring”. That’s why making an AO game is hard because alot of people might cry more extreme terms, like sexism or stuff like that, as they did for that japanese game, rapelay?, that game where you played as a pervert who breaks into a house and assault a mother and her two daughters (who look under 15 by the cover). Basically nudity only really works when it is introduced as normally, and it is not exagerated for the sake of looking sexy.
God forbid game designers work on innovations in gameplay, design and graphics. Yeah they should spend more time making games appeal more to heterosexual men. YEAH I THINK YOU’RE ONTO SOMETHING HERE. This is totally not a crappy article written to generate traffic to your otherwise bland and unoriginal writing.
Asking for great adult content that mashes well with storyline and great gameplay mechanics is like asking for porn with oscar worthy acting and storyline. It’s not possible. Sure, there are some good movies that do have sex scenes and what not, but most of them are either tastefully done or have no point in the story.
Either way, the nudity would have to be secondary to the gameplay. Remember in super metroid, where you can see Samus without the suit if you beat the game in less than 3 hours? Something like that may work, but again, it has got
to be secondary.
Heather Brooke FTW!!!!!!!!
Agreed that it is secondary to gameplay, but I think devs are just too afraid to even delve into it. Take a movie like 300 or Departed or anyhting mainstream, they manage to work in certain nudity that works with the plot. Games just dont even try and when they do it is so far fetched or not worth mentioning.
Adding people to the strip club scene in R6 would add a level of realism. even make the women clothed if you want but again to add to the effect you could add nudity.
Please dont get hyperbole or jokes get in the way of the overall message of the article.
@C Martinez - please send me a sample of your fine writing so I can criticize your work, but thanks for the feedback anyway.
…. This is a gaming editorial?… This just sounds like a nerdy, perverted, desperate high school kid kid who can’t get a girl for the life of him. Seriously, grow up. There are so many problems with this article. First of all, most gamers might be in the age group you are claiming, but not most of them are total pervs like you. Secondly, plenty of gamers are fathers of young children and young children often like to sneak up on their daddy playing his big boy games so he can see the cool game his daddy is playing. Dad’s don’t want to have to worry about their kids sneaking up on that. Thirdly, making a game like this would not help the industry at all. Sony and Nintendo will not even sell the rights to make the game on their console if the game gets an Ao rating.
In conclusion, grow up.
@ Turian - I agree with not showing your kids any mature material, but that is your responsibility, as with any other medium. I am sure you watch R rated movies and the such but dont show your kids, the same would hold true for video games. Playing an AO game, lock the door, not that hard buddy. It isnt about being perverted but having options, HBO has some over the top things, why cant a video game?
As for your comments about growing up, these are immaterial and dont prove your point. If anyhting they bring into question your level of maturity, just as an FYI we all at the site are adults with real jobs and mortgages, no need for growing up here.
You can have a real job and mortgage and still act like a 12 year old
I guess one of the problems that I have with this article is that there is no real indepth analysis as to why game publishers/designers are not taking a chance with nudity in games.
The way I see it, the rating AO is now associated with ratings such as NC-17 or Pornography. Just because a majority of the gamers are over 18 doesn’t mean there is a huge market for games that flaunt nudity the way the article describes. There is also the creative direction, overall flow of the game in terms of story telling vs gameplay aspect that has to be analyzed.
Also, one would have to look at how companies would advertise the game and how the media would react to the game. Remember, Fox portrayed Mass Effect as a sex simulator when it really wasn’t. That was huge. What would have happened to their reputation if the game was nothing but a sex simulator.
Also, what game designer would want to have that on his or her resume? This sounds like a rich topic that a gaming website can discuss, but all I see on the article is how great it would be for the writer if there were more nudity in games.
Also, I wanted to note that the Major console makers such as Sony and Nintendo won’t allow AO rated games for their console. So that could affect sales. I wonder what Microsoft would say about it.
Well, there you have it. Never mind actually having in-game nudity; even SUGGEST it and people are already at your throat; calling you nerdy, perverted, desperate. Simulated sex and nudity carries so many stigmas - graphic violence, however, is perfectly ok; you’ll never hear a peep about THAT (except when some kid shoots another kid while playing God of War).
Why is it sooo perverted to want to see the same content we see everywhere else in a console game? Who would it hurt? We all know it’d sell just fine, so what’s the problem? We have movies with sex and nudity. We have TV shows with sex and nudity. Artists paint nudes and sexual situations (albeit in a generally tasteful way). We have steamy books, porno mags, and the Internet is absolutely saturated with it - so why is this one creative medium off-limits?
I take the point about ‘quality control’ to heart, but people will ALWAYS make crappy games/movies, and there will ALWAYS be producers committed to quality, regardless of whether nudity is considered acceptable or not. So I ask you again: why is this a problem for all you people who denounce in-game sex/nudity as immoral, pathetic or pointless? Bah, you’re probably just feeling guilty about rubbing one out while playing DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball! XD
If I wanted to add ‘realism’ to the R6 Strip Club Scene I could also have men outside staggering drunk towards a dumpster to puke, and women in bathrooms shooting heroin and taking unnatural doses of painkiller to get through their days. Adding simply ‘nudity’ to M and AO games does not make them ‘real.’ It fortifies the atmosphere with Vitamin Boob and nothing more and since there is nothing more expensive than art in contemporary game production I just don’t see a sensible producer allocating the resources in the name of nipples. The ‘realism’ argument is a flimsy one at best you have to admit.
If it were fear keeping boobs out of video games then God of War would not have that minigame. It’s more likely a desire to get the game out without pandering to every single interest out there. Because ultimately the perception of pandering is more damaging to a game than worry over parenting groups. Anybody remember the tale of Dave Mirra BMX XXX? Prejudice over nudity in video games is rooted in the games that had nudity AND SUCKED. The damage is done; I dare say no AAA video game producer will market the ‘now more nudity than ever!’ angle for fear of the ‘just another Acclaim stunt’ stigma.
@ Razmael- To use the argument it’s already in movies and the internet and magazines and whatnot is stupid. That’s like saying “oh there’s already lots of people doing drugs so let’s legalize it.” No one here is saying that it’s ok for this stuff to be in all other types of media, but this is one of the last ones that hasn’t been practically taken over by it, it’s one of the last things to protect.
This biggest problem with this is companies like Wal-Mart, Gamestop, Target, etc. have policies not to sell games that are AO.
I honestly thought that a 15 year old had written this. The main point of your “article” was basically, “Why can’t I combine my gaming time with my porn watching time?” You had such shallow reasons to back up your claim as well.
It’s everywhere else. So what? Like someone else commented, just because everyone else is jumping off the proverbial bridge, you want to be next in line? Or, just because all the cool kids are doing it doesn’t make it right.
Also, all your suggestions are SEXIST. You want “a huge pair of breasts running your way”, “two lesbians” and “the main character giving his female counterpart”. Are you trying to alienate female gamers? I am a girl. I play games. I’m not a lesbian. Why would I want to see more boobs? I have my own, thanks. Why would I want to play as a male having sex, or as a lesbian? That’s what I have a boyfriend for.
And there’s others, but that’s okay.
Videogames have a bad enough reputation for its violence, sex in videogames is not needed and will only make their rep worse. Every game will turn into just violence and sex cheese fest.
sweet!!! Master Chief could be bangin the commander while kicking ass, and drink dear blood to keep him going (On the commander that is)
Wow I have to say that this repressed sexual mentality is pretty funny.
@ Razmael - I agree - you mention nudity and everyone gets in an uproar, wow.
I agree that adding drunk guys/people to R6 would also be great! That would make it feel real, to have strippers and people in there smoking and carrying on.
The point of having the nudity in would be to enhance the experience and talking about it does not make someone a pervert. If you think so then you are way repressed in how you think.
I say video game makers are afraid of the impliications of putting nudity in thier games and get called names. Not a very good argument if you ask me.
@ Sally - video games have a bad rep because of closed minded thinking, people think the medium brainwashes chidren which is crap! If so everyone that watched the A team growing up would be running out to get an AK47 and kill people. Putting sex or nudity in games just pushed the limits of games and shows people that it can be done. But right now everyone is afraid of just these types of mentalities.
Why should video games fear AO ratings? Why should they be reduced to ridiculous mini games in God of War? Why do we limit our devs?
If there is a demand, there is a market. Like in everything else, Sex Sells.
Sex scenes in movies are okay for most people, porns are okay only for some.
That is why there are different ratings for movies, music, video games etc.
I am a female gamer and I wounldnt be offended as long as its done in good taste.
To be honest I would prefer my son to become a playa and my daughter a slut before they become murderer or a pycho with all the violence in these games anywayz.
Yikes, a pervert is a strong word and accusation for someone who is expressing their freedom of speech…
@ Turian209:
“That’s like saying ‘oh there’s already lots of people doing drugs so let’s legalize it.’” - I think we SHOULD legalize it. That would go a long way to reducing crime rates, don’t you think? Also would mean better control and regulation; would also bring in more taxes and stimulate the economy.
As for video games being the last bastion against the horrifying depiction of SEX (oooh, scary); C Martinez makes a good point: “..then God of War would not have that minigame.” We wouldn’t hear about Hot Coffee mods, or that GTA4 lets you have lapdances in a strip club, etc etc.
It’s ALREADY there - devs are just somewhat timid about really opening up the floodgates (economics and popular opinion), so they hamstring it with ‘pixelation’ or just being ’suggestive’ instead of ‘explicit’. (meanwhile explicit gore, again; is more than acceptable, it’s a PLUS) BTW, C.M, you make some good points; mine is that just because that’s the way it’s always been, doesn’t mean that’s the way it always has to BE.
THE INTERNET IS FOR PORN.
ALL THESE GUYS UNZIP THEIR FLIES FOR PORN, PORN, PORN!!!
SO GRAB YOUR DICK AND DOUBLE CLICK FOR PORN PORN PORN!!!
LOL great Avenue Q reference!!
yeah, I’m suprised noone whipped it out yet.
Nah most have just taken the route of callin me a pervert for mentioning nudity hehehe
I meantioned heather brooke and got nothing for it. And if you have never see heather brooke, you don’t know what a BJ is.
Definition from Merriam Webster Dictionary,
Pervert: to cause to turn aside or away from what is generally done or accepted
So look @ the cup half full…according to all these haters…you are a leader
Drink up…celebrate!

They’re not calling you a pervert for talking about nudity, they’re calling you a pervert because of the way you’re talking about nudity. Instead of making cogent, reasonable points about the perception of sexuality in modern media, you talk about how you want “a huge pair of breasts running your way”. I also find it very interesting that you didn’t respond to Girl Gamer’s very intelligent comment about the sexist bias in your little diatribe (I won’t sully the term by calling it an article). You’re immature, and maybe a little thick. I hope for your sake you can grow up, and maybe in a few years you’ll look back at this and see how juvenile you were.
Whats up with all the drama?
I am a girl. I am a gamer. I have boobs. I also have a PhD. My point is, who cares?
I will admit some of the comments were not the best, such as show bush or go home, but the author has his right to express himself just like you do. Look @ all the responses which were generated, so to me this was a successful “article”.
But is he calling you names? I think there is a lot of growing up to do and not necesarily by the author of this “article”.
I’ve played Battle Raper do yourself a favor and don’t play it. Yeah it sounds fun on paper a fighting where womens clothes get completely ripped off, but your only making yourself feel creepy by playing. Honestly, a fighting where you beat up women rip their clothes off and have hot passionate sex for no reason. The gameplay is week also. Sexy Beach 3 is okay if it’s your type of game again I felt creepy. Artifical Girl 2 a game where you can make your girl like Kasumi and have sex with her at anytime. You know what scratch that I’m downloading all that shit again.
I think nudity in games if done tastefully and used to enhance gaming is fun.
However we should all be fair about it. I beleive that the fairness should include natural apperance of both women and men, and that if you want gratuitist nudity in games, you should purchas an adult game to entertain yourself. However in some games, i beleive nudity would help the storie line, and enhance realism.
