And the ballsiest statement of the month award goes to Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley. In an interview with GameDaily, Smedley had this to say when asked if the PS3 would get an MMO game to rival World of Warcraft:
“I absolutely do [think we'll see that], and in fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you’ve already got an online userbase. It’s a massive advantage over the PC and we don’t have to worry about graphics cards or things like that. It’s going to be very big. Console online gaming in general I think is going to be one of the next huge phases of growth in the online gaming space.”
Ummm, I just don’t think it’s going to happen. Console gamers aren’t going to buy the game and then pay a $15 a month subscription fee to play online. Console gamers want to play Halo or Call of Duty and shoot people in the head, not for guilds and party up to take down a goblin horde. Just my 2 cents… I don’t think it’ll ever happen.

It’s definitely a wild statement, but if they can pull it off, I’m all for it.
And when you think about it, Microsoft already charges you a monthly fee for shooting people in the head. Sony charges nothing. If they put a MMORPG online, I wouldn’t mind paying $10-15 monthly if the game really is a WoW-killer.
If you think about it though, most MMO players, especially MMORPG, aren’t console gamers as well. They mostly stick to PC. So this would need to be a game that would target the console market, which unfortunately just doesn’t get the MMORPG world and the need to pay a monthly fee
I’m more of a console player who also pays MMOs. MMORPGs are all I play on PCs.
This is a ballsy statement any way you slice it, just hope that they come up with something really good and not some cheap everquest knockoff or expansion.
I think they could make an MMORPG on the PS3 that will perform and sell really well, but beating WoW is another story.
Authors should speak for themselves.
I want to MMO on PS3!
The lack of a standard keyboard is a real shortcoming though.
He forgot about input, and control. That is quite an oversight for the Big JuJu Man. I think anyone who knows gaming will insist on a keyboard /mouse interface. Try playing WOW with a game controller. Yeah like that would be fun.
But the PS3 supports bluetooth mouse and keyboards.
And USB mouse/keyboard. I use them in Unreal Tournament 3 sometimes
I think a PC environment is more suited for a MMORPG. You don’t play a RPG in front of your TV in my opinion.
@ Archlord - Agreed, MMO’s are built for PC’s or at least the ones that have a lot of depth to them. You can make a simpler MMO like Phantasy Star and that works well on consoles but it doesnt have the depth of a WoW.
