Downloading video games the wave of the future?

DLC
One of our readers came across this article that focused on the current state of gaming on how downloading video games may become the wave of the future? Will CD’s and DVD’s give way to just pure downloadable content? It could be quite possible with the widespread acceptance of Broadband and High Speed Internet services, in a not so distant past cartridges were the only gaming format available and those have gone the way of the dinosaur now.

According to the NPD Group, a consulting firm that collects sales data on consumer purchases like games, over the past three months about 86 percent of video games were bought on discs, with the remaining 14 percent making it to computers or game consoles as downloads.

14% is pretty impressive if you ask me for purchases.

It is very feasible to see bigger HDD’s hit consoles, which has already begun, and possibly see more incentives for downloading titles. Right now the majority of downloadable titles are mostly add-on content or arcade games, Xbox is trying to expand on this with the Xbox originals, but they lack achievements.

In order for downloadable games to thrive there needs to be an incentive for spending the time downloading them, if not people will just stick to purchasing discs at their local game stores.

For people who like playing video games, whether they are hard-core players or occasional dabblers, downloading won’t be the main way to procure games. But online delivery is becoming very handy for the players who want to build quickly on the experience they had in a favorite game like the shooter Halo 3 or the role-playing adventure Oblivion. It will also be useful for those who want to relive an experience of a favorite game played a generation ago, like Pac-Man or King’s Quest.

I for one like having the physical media. That way it feels like I actually paid for something.
