50GB Not Enough Space for Metal Gear Solid 4

MGS4 Screen

Did you do a double take when you read that headline? That’s exactly what I did when I read this interview with Hideo Kojima. Apparently, the 50GB available on the BluRay disc just isn’t enough for Metal Gear Solid 4.

Seriously, Kojima, what the hell are you doing over there? If you can’t fit your game into 50GB, there’s something wrong. Are you using fully uncompressed textures for everything in the game? How many insanely large CGI cutscenes are there?

Maybe the inclusion of Metal Gear Online Starter Pac on the disc is causing the size issue. Whatever the cause, if we start seeing multi-disc BluRay games, I’m going to be a little upset.

can the PS3 read dual layer BD discs? cause if so maybe they can make a 75gb dual layer discs, considering they were able to make a single layer 50gb disc

hopefully the game will be epic, i thought it was bullshit when kojima said 25gb wasnt enough but now i believe him xD

and its funny considering there wont be multiple language tracks or different language subtitles, what are filling it? FMV?

the MGO section cant be more than 700mb, i mean warhawk is only 857mb and it has double the character count and larger and more detailed maps so IDK

Why didn’t they do a dual-layer blu-ray if it doesn’t fit on a single layer?

The reason they don’t compress the video/audio is because the transfer rate on the decompresser may be too low.

  3. We’ll see how it is when the game is out if it is worth it ;3

  4. White-Sharingan

@Suki- trust me it’ll be worth it, although we cant be 100%, im pretty sure Kojima wont let us down, when has he? never IMO

I >PROMISE< you that it wont be a bad game

  5. @ Sharingan.

Okay, buy it for me and i’ll play.

They fit Half-Life 2 / Episode 1 / Episode 2 / Portal / and TF2 on one DVD. I think that maybe devs. for the PS3 get lazy because they don’t have to compress their games so they complain when they hit the 50GB mark.

Either they are not compressing enough, or there are a ton of cutscenes. Lost Odyssey is 4 DVDs and it has a good number of cutscenes, but then again the graphics aren’t what MGS4 is going to deliver.

  7. @Fragloser. Because 360/PC games always have to have the disc size in mind when they do have to create a game for it. Why compress for ps3 when they got the space to use? ;o

  8. CJ

I wouldn’t say PC devs have size in matter as much as the 360. But GEEZ!!! 50 gigs isn’t enough?! This game must be HUGE!!!

  9. @CJ.

You’re right. forgot they can install the game on the PC but they still have to compress it down first before it gets extracted ;3

Even with installs, some PC games span a bunch of discs. Doom3 and Halflife 2 come to mind. How many discs does Crysis come with for install?

But yeah, devs need to take compression into account from now on, because not compressing anything out of sheer laziness isn’t good either.

  11. @ Wasn’t Doom 3 on CDs and not DVD? ;o

  12. nostars

^^Not sure, but I remember the install took forever and was a bunch of discs.

  13. I think it was. [Dont know about HL2 though]

I remember installing Baldur’s Gate. Insert Disc 1 to install.. Then Insert disc 2, 3, 4, and then insert Disc 2 to play xD Good times.

  14. Doom was on CD. Half Life 2 I can’t say for sure because I downloaded from Steam. Crysis I got as a download also, but that only takes up 7.4gb of hard drive space after install, so I would imagine it comes on 1 DVD.

LMAO only 7.4 gigs. I remember when I had a 6 Gig hard drive and it was huge.

  16. Yeah well I only have a 20gb partition for Windows on my MacBook, so it’s pushing me to the limits… haha

  17. There’s never enough Hard drive space. I remember I went from 40gb to 200mb lol. the life. Now that I have a 500gb HDD. it’s still not enough. I’m down to around 200gb. Mostly from games and such. *Needs to delete* But really, it must be the sound files. Is Kojima shooting for 7.1 or 5.1 sound with 1080p @ 30fps for gameplay and 60fps during cutscenes? anyways, game comes out in June so I expect some big things happening between that. and one of it being Sony or Konami doing a sweepstake to give away some game and system :D . Time to go make some videos and dress up to be ready!

  18. The game will definitely have at least 5.1 Linear PCM (which is fully uncompressed audio). Trust me, it makes a HUGE difference to go from regular Dolby Digital to L-PCM. I can understand that taking up a huge amount of space.

I think the biggest culprit will be the CGI sequences

  19. @ Matt. I wouldn’t worry about the cutscenes though [Don't think there's CGI But just in-game cutscenes] since it’s using in-game models. I mean I remember playing FFXII which uses a DVD disc and everything fitted fine. Square had a few movies in there but most were just in-game cutscenes to help with the space consumption. Always can contact Kojima Production or ask Ryan Payton about what’s on the disc. :D

  20. They don’t want to comment at the moment :)

  21. CJ

If Warhawk is that small, did they still put it on bluray? or did they save some money and put it on DVD. I could prolly just go downstairs and find out by opening the case, but i’m to lazy to do that right now

  22. Yep. Warhawk is on Blu-ray. Can’t go wrong with a nicely made disc though. and plus, it acts as an alt. mirror :P

  23. CJ

Oh, so my girlfriend could use it in the car to put on her make-up. Sweet!

  24. White-Sharingan

I wonder, will MGS4 have installs? I just dont see how they couldnt fit it in 50gb, I guess he uncompress sounds and cutscenes

  25. @Sharingan Maybe but I don’t see it exceed 5 and at the very least a small 2gb install. They may do like Uncharted where it doesn’t need an install.

  26. White-Sharingan

eh as long as it doesnt exceed 5gb im good I guess. Uncharted having no load times other than the beginning is great! Maybe MGS4 will do the same? *sigh* only one can dream

  27. nostars

True, Uncharted runs great after the initial load.
