According a Yahoo news report, Sony has sold 10.5 million PS3’s worldwide. That puts the company clearly on target to meet 11 million units sold through March, a number that was set back in December.
With BluRay declared the winner today in the HD format wars, I’d expect the sales numbers to increase even more in the short-term as consumers that have been on the fence pick up the console. I know a few people that picked up a PS3 as a BluRay player only and don’t play any games, but have since gotten hooked on Rock Band and Warhawk.
It’s important to note that Sony defines “sold” as number of units actually sold to consumers, not how many units they ship into the retail channel as Microsoft does. So when they say there’s 10.5 million units sold, there’s 10.5 million units in homes around the world, not sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

Just a note: I bought an xbox 360 Saturday night. 2 days later it stopped reading discs. I was gonna just swap it out at best buy under the 30 day warranty, but they had no more units in store; so they just credited back the card i purchased with. Then I went to Circuit City and picked up a new unit. So, over the weekend my local best buy (and all other best buys “in the area”) sold out of XBOX 360’s. There were plenty of PS3’s on the shelves. Atleast locally, it seems the 360’s are still selling really well.
Wow, 10.5 million Blu-ray players (at least) in households. And some people wonder why HD-DVD was doomed.
