Review: Discs of TRON for XBLA

Not many of us were old enough to play the original arcade version of Tron. For those of us who were, the game was something special. When video games were that thing you did after school because, well, the internet was not around and not everyone had cable TV. Tron was an arcade phenomenon. The premise was simple. Knock the other guy off of his platform by hurling electronic disks at his face. The graphics were considered outstanding for its time. Disney Interactive decided to “reissue” the arcade classic into the next gen. Worst. Idea. Ever.

I’m just going to say it. This game is bad. I’m talking I’d rather sit front row at Celion Dion then play this game bad. For starters, the gameplay is horrendous. You aim with the right stick and the slighest movement and you miss. Once the game’s difficulty picks up, this is a fatal flaw. You can get upgrades, but they don’t make the game anymore fun than if they did not exist at all. The other guy can get them also, and he is a lot better than you are and has much better aim. The graphics are unholy. It looks like it was taken right from 1982. I know XBLA games are not on the same level as major releases, but come on, this is an insult.

The multiplayer is the worst of all. You CANNOT play against your buddy one on one. You can play against him as he plans another CPU character. You can interfere with his match with upgrades. The multiplayer is basically to see who can get a higher score from playing a different match altogether. The game’s framerate will drop, a lot actually, with 2 players.

The final word is that this game used to be an arcade classic. Disney tried to bring it to the masses of today and missed the boat on every aspect. The game is not fun to play, it looks and sounds terrible, the multiplayer is basically a half-assed attempt, and lasting appeal is nonexistant for all the aforementioned reasons.

Final score: 2 of 10

Part of this arcade game’s charm was the giant Tron arcade cabinet that you had to stand in to play the game. Take that away and the game is just mediocre.
