80gb PS3 Discontinued at Gamestop and EB Games

ps3-grill.jpgIt seems as if the 80gb PS3 is going the same place the 60gb went; the Island of Misfit Consoles. Anyone who wishes to buy a PS3 in the future will have to get the 40gb version and forfeit the ability for backwards compatibility. There have been grumblings of a 100 or 120gb model, but nothing is confirmed. The only explanation is the BC is no longer a necessity and is being phased out the way that MS did for the Xbox. Its not that hard to drop a bigger HDD in the PS3, but the average gamer won’t know this.

you only need a bigger harddrive to get bc or is it there’s extra programs on the 80gb that allow it?

The 80GB has the PS2 GPU built in to give PS2 BC (software based). The 60GB has complete PS2 hardware built in (CPU and GPU) for hardware based BC. The 40GB console has no PS2 hardware built in, which is why there’s no BC available.

SCEA has said they plan to use a 2 SKU system in North America, so phasing out the 80GB console would likely mean it will be replaced by something else. When the 80GB was first released, it was stated as a Limited Edition pack anyway.

I’m so glad I have the 60 gig. I was thinking about upgrading the HDD.
