The 60GB has complete PS2 hardware built in (CPU and GPU) for hardware based BC. The 40GB console has no PS2 hardware built in, which is why there's no BC available. SCEA has said they plan to use a 2 SKU system in North America, so phasing out the 80GB console would likely mean it will be replaced by something else. When the 80GB was first released, it was stated as a Limited Edition pack anyway. The 80GB has the PS2 GPU built in to give PS2 BC (software based).
