What Does RGB Full on PS3 Do?

Ninja Gaiden Sigma PS3 RGB Full After

If you have a PS3 and HDTV, you need to enable the RGB Full setting. Why it’s not enabled by default, I have no idea. But it makes the graphics much much better.

The Xbox 360 has this setting enabled by default, but for some reason, Sony has it set to “limited”. It really improves the textures and colors across the board. Check out before and after shots after the jump.

Does this just work with HDMI? Or will it work with Component? I heard it just works with HDMI

@CJ – I believe that it also works with component. It is worth a try anyways, because I have read on other forums that it makes the games that use a lot of color look a LOT better.

  3. thanks for the tip, I’ll have to check it out

I’ll have to try it out on UT or something… Does anyone else know what the color filter does? or the super white thing?

RGB does work with component as well.

Sorry, but you are wrong. I know the words “Limited” and “Full” sound like bad/good, but in truth “Limited” is the better option. Trust me, I’ve worked as a television technician for 15 years. You’re not alone though… evereyone seems to have gotten this wrong.
The reason is very technical but in short, it has to do with two different reference levels in the video industry.

If you like tech specs, here is a quote from AVS-Forum, probably the worlds most serious home theatre webpage:

RGB @ Limit – Levels stay where they are. Y 1, CbCr 128 will be RGB 1, 1, 1 when done.
RGB @ Full – Levels get compressed. Y 1, CbCr 128 will be RGB 16, 16, 16 when done. (Best guess based on looking at image)
Full is different than the usual expansion where Y 16, CbCr 128 becomes RGB 0, 0, 0.

    The best video quality is:

    Output – YCbCr
    RGB – Limit
    Super White – On

BTB is still passed when RGB is set to limit, just bring brightness up to see it. Then turn brightness back down where it belongs. When you set brightness based on RGB limit and then switch to RGB full, you will see the BTB stripe. This is because you just remapped Y 7, CbCr 128 (the BTB stripe) to a much higher value.

  7. Not so fast, even your pictures demonstrate the black crush tat is coming from your choice of Full from Limited. On a properly calibrated TV, Limited is the better choice than Full

As you can see in the AFTER picture is more wild than BEFORE picture
and the lines is smoother in the before.
SONY is a very good company and the the reason is very very high definition isnt allways god for your eyes to see a zigzag line.
just look in pictures eyes.after is wilder than before.
    and the “OS” is right.
i just tested on my ps3 with Little Big Planet.it is so simple game to make a easy test.
Now for all those who want to make FULL with component i say isnt the same to do this.Is better with HDMI becoouse is faster.

    Cya!

Yes Os , Eric and Denis is right the levels is highter.
But from the other side i can see a beutyful HD picture.
I am still like limited because is default.
