More Unannounced Features in PS3 Firmware v2.10

Loot Ninja PS3 Theme

So today’s PS3 firmware update has been the talk of the intarwebs. Not only did we get DivX support and Blu-Ray profile 1.1, but there was a huge unannounced feature in that all PS1 games will now work with Remote Play on the PSP. Well, after a bit of playing around, I found a couple more features that Sony didn’t talk about.

The first, and my personal favorite, is videos \you copy to your PS3 hard drive will automatically have a 15 second preview created for the icon. Before, this was something that you had to manually do yourself. And it’s a feature a lot of people didn’t know about. Unfortunately it doesn’t work yet for videos downloading from the PlayStation Store. To add to this, preview videos work inside folders now, when before all you got was a still image. A new “planet” visualizer style was added while you’re playing music on the PS3, which can be accessed by hitting Square while listening to a song. Definitely check it out because it’s pretty damn cool. Finally, the PlayStation Store got a bit of an update/change when downloading videos. Of recent, there was a play button above Perform in Background when you downloaded a video. That’s now changed to say Play While Downloading.

Overall, some small refinements that Sony is working into the PS3 that help the overall experience. Hopefully early 2008 will bring the coveted in-game XMB access for friends lists and messaging (especially cross-game invites).
