Fall Dashboard Update Kills My 8th Xbox 360… Yes, 8th

Smashed Xbox 360

I swear to God, I’m so fed up with broken Xbox 360’s. This is my f’ing 8th console to die. MY F’ING 8TH!!!!!!! Quality Assurance my ass. This is ridiculous. This is piss poor product development and testing.

Like I’ve said before, I haven’t had any other systems die on me. Ever. The Xbox 360 is the only system ever to break. And now I’ve gone through 8 of them. Tonight, after grabbing the new Fall Dashboard Update, it started making weird noises and froze up in Guitar Hero 3. When I turned it off and back on… guess what? Yep. Red Ring of Death. Good times people. Good times.

It’s not like I treat it like crap. It’s babied. My Xbox 360 has it’s own shelf in the entertainment center, with full ventilation from the front and rear. The power brick also sits on the shelf fully ventilated. The console is never moved when playing (in fact, it’s only moved a tiny bit once a week to dust). The console is kept perfectly clean, as are my other systems. I haven’t had any problems with my PS3 (save long install times) or my Wii. Never had problems with my PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube before that.

I really hope someone from Microsoft reads this. This is unacceptable. Once my Best Buy replacement plan is up, I’m done. Having 8 consoles fail on me in a little over 2 years is ludicrous. I’m sorry Halo and Gears of War, but if I have to worry every time I turn the console on that it might die, it’s not worth my trouble. Which is just really sad. I love the games on Xbox 360. I really do. But until they get the manufacturing issues worked out, it’s not worth the hassle anymore in my eyes.

Here’s to hoping your 360’s don’t die from the update. Cheers.

So what xbox are you going for now :)
    Elite or Halo?

I have Elite now, and prefer the larger drive space. Problem is, my Best Buy doesn’t have any Elites…

Hmm… Who has the Halo edition here then?

My Halo edition has been running fine I think. When you get a new one, check the lot# on the boxes. The newer lot numbers generally mean a new system. You can also crack open the serial number flip out and check for the manufacturing date that way as well.

taz8080 has the Halo Edition box. I’d much rather have the larger HDD space if possible.

Perhaps, you should try the new Falcon systems. Also, you should have plenty of ventilation on top, sides, front and back. Not just the front and back. Might explain why you get 8 broken systems. Many have had their system since launch without problems. Statistically if you replace your console every single time with a new one (assuming BB replacement plan) the chances of it breaking is pretty darn small.

I bought my first 360 about a month ago. So far I love it, but you can bet your booty I got the replacement plan. I had 2 of the original Xbox stop reading discs on me, so I learned my lesson.

Back around the time of the Gamecube/Xbox/PS2 generation I read a quote in EGM:

“I don’t think Nintendo is here for the digital-entertainment revolution. They are a toy company.”

—Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach comments on the competition in an article in BusinessWeek last June

And of course my response was “Well, you arrogant jackass, at least they make high quality ‘toys’. I can still fire up my Super Nintendo without a single problem. Unlike your digital entertainment revolution which I can now use as a big black paperweight.”

My condolences - it’s sad that i look at my 360 wondering not “if” it will break, but “when”.

Why don’t you get a PS3 then? Buy the xbox 360 next fall when the graphics chip has been shrunk as well as the processor, and play all the PS3 games until then. After all, it’s not like the xbox 360 has a monopoly on fun, and you’d have a system that plays good games and doesn’t break.

Thats cool Baoud, since he didn’t get used at all. He has had a BB replacement warranty, so he actually hasn’t had to buy 9 separate 360s. I went through 4 PS2s because of the Disk read error, but i STILL got PS2 after PS2 because the games were better, and I enjoyed the console more.

This is the case with the 360. There are more games out that are “better” (list is shrinking), but I will replace 360 after 360 because of the games.

Maybe you shouldn’t troll forums so much, and actually read the post before you comment, does that sound like a good idea, or can you not even read what I’m saying since your are so PRO PS3.

I don’t hate the PS3 at all, so I’m not a 360 fanboy. In fact, I would probably buy the PS3 if FFXIII was out for it right now.

Final Words: This is M$ second system and it has problems. Sonys second system had a lot of problems too, mainly the disk read error that pissed everyone off.

    Every manufacturer has their faults.

Yo, it’s sad that you have had to go through that crap. As a consumer and recovering 360 owner I know your pain. Not to the the same extent, but having to have more than one replacement is rediculous. I recently traded in my 360 for a PS3 because of the hassles of replacing the system every 6 months (or less) and the crap that I had to go through with one of my expired accounts.

Anyway, point of the story; people will only take this crap for so long before they decide to buy a product that they don’t have to wory about.

360 has a 30 something percent failure rate, imagine if all those gamers took thier money elsewhere.

I personally don’t have a 360 for this reason. It sounds like you didn’t have the falcon chip set in yours, since that has been implemented I haven’t heard as many 360 break down stories. Although I don’t have a 360 I do think it has the better amount of games but still won’t put money in MS hands until it is completly fixed. So until the Graphics chip is shrinked down I will wait it out. I think of it this way what is more important?

Is it more important to have good running hardware?
    or
Is it more important to have good games?

Well IMHO if you don’t have good running hardware then what is the point of having good games for the system since you can never play them. There for Having good Running Hardware is more important to me. I would think you would all agree.

I’ve got a Xbox 360, and I had my first one go down in March 07.
Ok I was a little p*ss off. I sent it off to the menders for six weeks (it was hard waiting around for my return)
But in that time, I did some research on this, and found suggestions of buying a external fan attachment would solve this heating issue.
Since I done that, I have not once had my box crash, no red ring of death. Nothing of the sort. My friend had the same problem. Now his working just fine. It is noisy on when, but I live that rather then another 6 six of waiting.
We all now know it was a design fault on Microsoft’s part.

I’m still on my first 360 (a core with all the bells and whistles) It’s almost 2 years old and works well. But after the latest update (installed last night), my rental GHIII started experiencing incredibly slow loads. So slow in fact that I thought the 360 had locked up. As I reached to turn it off, it went to the main screen.

@Me, Drunk Pandas is not making this up. I am the only person I know who is still on his first 360. My co-worker is on his second, my co-worker’s son is on his second, my brother is on his second, my nephew is on his third, my cousin is I believe on his second or third. There was also one documented case on the interweb of a dude who had at least 11 360’s die on him. And dude, what’s with the name calling? That’s completely unnecessary, unless you’re a Microsoft shareholder (or a 360 fanboy).

Microsoft did an incredibly subpar job at quality control with the Xbox 360, and it’s a sad state of affairs when we buy a console and feel the need to buy insurance for it. None of my other consoles have insurance, (I have the Sega Master System, Genesis, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, N64, Xbox, Gamecube, Xbox 360, PS3, and the Wii, not including portables) but my 360 does. Thankfully, my 360 works fine *knocks on wood* .

I love when things just resort to name calling. What happened doesn’t agree with your perception of the console, I’m sorry. I love the Xbox 360, which is why I keep getting it replaced (that, and I haven’t had to pay for it).

I was honestly thinking of scanning all my receipts to show you I’m really on my 8th, but that would take me way too much time to scan each one and blur/remove all the info I don’t want getting out there on the internet. Plus, do I really have to justify myself to the skeptics? Those who know me can vouch that I’m not going to lie about it or make stuff up just to get my “15 seconds of fame”

The only problem that I have seen with the Xbox360 firsthand is that most people don’t understand just how advanced machines need excellent ventilation and cooling. Believe it or not even with front and back ventilation your 360 can still overheat. I have mine set on top of my, “video game shelves,” and have NEVER had a problem, it is a first gen, launch day 360. I also have three other 360’s (3 are Premium and 1 is an Elite). The other thing is that the power brick should be in a separate area than the console, that is why they put a three foot long cord from it to the 360. All I can say is good luck with your next console and hopefully you can figure out why they keep breaking (since I have a hard time believing that it is only bad design and bad production).

I’m on my fourth 360 now. I did get the update installed and was running afterwards, but later that night I had the RRoD. My three 360s were all with the old-fashioned cooler though. I went out and bought an Arcade model which has the new, hefty cooler in it and I’m using that till I get my Premium back. After that my Arcade will be my bedroom MCE/Puzzle Quest machine :)

Looks like my 360 woes are continuing, as no Best Buy’s around me have the Elite in stock. For whatever reason, you can’t buy it for in store pickup online either. Maybe they’re waiting for new bundles to come in… who knows. Whatever the reason, it’s gonna be a few more days before I can get a new 360.

You have to be doing something wrong or illegal, especially since they give you three year warranty yet you decide to crush the box and not send it in…I think you just got caught. i had my first xbox for 1 year an a half before it RRoD on me and i move it around from place to place….so stop hacking it and it might last.

Well, L-N has been popular for awhile as Scuba has said. If you look at their posts, most of them are used by other sites, which is pretty sweet I must say.

Man you should read the contradicting crap you’ve typed, ninja. If that’s a photo you found on the net of a bashed 360 - why watermark it? It’s yours and you bashed it, there was nothing that the update that could have done that to your console. Thus making your whole Best Buy replacement plan (who’d take that back?) bogus.
