Microsoft Charging for Pedestrian Content

greedy.jpg

Have you ever wanted to watch the History of the Need for Speed series in HD? Probably not, but if you want to, its gonna cost you exactly 240 MS points. Umm what. I need to fork over 3 bucks for a “making of” video? Thats insane. Furthermore, if you want to watch a Professional Halo 3 match, thats gonna cost you 90 MS points. Wait a minute. I can watch NFL football for free yet I have to pay for cyber athletes. Call me a traitor, but Pro Gamers are not athletes. Anyone who disagrees is high on peyote. You can find these two must haves on Xbox Live, unless you are in India.

That is actually ridiculous. I know that you could watch the MLG tournament for Halo 2 online via. live feed, so we really shouldn’t have to pay for stuff that is old news. Hell, I even watched part of the MLG Halo 2 tournament, but it got boring pretty quickly for me.

Wow. I did not think Microsoft was that desperate for cash, but i guess they are.

@Rhomp - Why would Microsoft be desperate for cash? Some of their stuff is a rip off, but it is to make money from people who just have money to throw around, not because they are short on cash. If they were short on cash they would not have shelled out 1bil for consoles affected with the red rings.

Who knows, they may be desperate, but it is VERY unlikely because they have XP, VIsta, 2000, Server, and many other products.

I don’t think its a matter of cash flow. Its just an example of someone charging money for an inane service or product. Elder Scrolls Horse Armor anyone?

I think this is more of an issue with MS being greedy so you ARE right when you say they are desperate for cash, they are just “desperate”… hehe…

It could be an inside joke. Let’s see how many assholes pay 3 bucks. Could be like a march madness office pool.

Hehe Scuba, you posted right before me. My comment wasn’t directed to you, it was directed to myself :)
Oh yea… Elder Scrolls Horse Armor… What was that? $5 for armor that did nothing?

Microsoft wasn’t the “publisher” of the Horse Armor, so they didn’t pick the price point. I’m not sure they picked the price point for this video content either, but I have no idea. I’m sure MS tries to get a few bucks any way they can, but this might be a case of someone else gouging consumers. Just because it is XBLM doesn’t mean that it’s Microsoft setting the prices.

    Leo:

You are abs right. You would also think that they would have some say what goes up there. Even though it really is not there fault, they look like fools.

People cry about everything Microsoft does, hating on MS is getting old, they can charge what they want for this crap, XBL is theirs, and no one is under any obligation to buy the crap, do not whine about anything that you do not have to buy! If no one buys their crap the price will fall trust me, now shut up, all of you.

@Hank - people have been saying that for 2 years now… it doesn’t seem to be working too well

    Hank:

No one is whining and no one is buying. I/we are pointing out just a ridiculous occurrence. I for one think MS is way beyond Sony in next gen. No one is hating here man.

Well the reason things are not changing is because idiots keep buying this stuff, and according to the rules of the free market, if it is selling well at those prices, then the prices are not too high.

    HANK:

    I’m with you.

Everyone quit complaining about something you do NOT have to buy.

Someone out there will buy it, guaranteed.

Microsoft are in business to make money and to provide a service. Where ever they can place content that costs next to nothing to put up but has the potential to make them even a few dollars, they will do so.

It’s called a BUSINESS - think about that the next time you buy your #1 big mac meal at Macdonald’s for $4. . Sit there and break down the REAL cost of that meal which will get you to about $1.00 if your lucky and then realize as you suck down that Mickeydees secret sauce that you have been getting shafted all this time BUT you never bitched and posted rants and raves on internet forums about it did you?

    Get over it.

It’s not “Microsoft”, it’s the content provider, so have a go at EA (surprise surprise) and MLG or whoever it was.

All you languishing Microsoft blind eyes, yes MS DOES in fact force the pricing on XBL. All you have to do is a TINY bit of reasearch on the subject and you will find many developers who do not approve of their stuff costing money, but MS FORCES it (ie; Gears of War).

ALLTHOUGH, I would never think EA would have a problem with it, since they are MS’s best friend this generation.

Really mircosoft could but this up for free.. im not saying it did not cost money to make those videos because some one has to get paid to just be a camera man. But im sure microsoft could foot the bill, but that does not make business sense. They could post it online and make $$$ from banner ads like everyone else though. but that does not work on a console. SO i guess this is a little justified, but not really.

    @ fanboyhater

Sorry, but you’re mistaken about MS forcing publishers to charge money. In the case of “Gears of War,” MS was publisher. The publisher choses the prices. It is true that Epic wanted the stuff to be free for “Gears”; but they weren’t the publisher, so it wasn’t their decision. Had Epic been the publisher, they could have given the additional content for free like they wanted to … They also would have had to pay for all that marketing surrounding the game’s release.

MS doesn’t force other publishers to charge for content. Some things have come out free of charge from the get-go. Not from Microsoft, but from Ubisoft.
