Editorial: Why is the Gaming Community Filled With So Much Hate?

Simpsons Comic Book Guy

It’s been going on a for a while, but it’s been getting worse lately. The gaming community in general is a giant bunch of haters. Whether it’s fanboys and console wars, different opinions on a game, there’s always someone around to start some drama. Seriously, what’s the deal here?

It’s bad enough that gamers have a nasty stigma attached with older generations and those that just generally don’t get our hobby, but why do we need to turn on ourselves? The hatred in the community became increasingly apparent with reviews showing up for Assassin’s Creed. Some reviewers praised the game, while others just didn’t get it and gave low scores. While this caused an uproar with those with high expectations for the game, where it really hit a new low was with the flame-fests that ensued. Gamers who didn’t agree on both sides of the table came out of the woodwork to voice their opinions. This is something we here at Loot Ninja encourage, because a good debate never hurt anyone. But those opinions aren’t usual debate; they’re nothing short of violent and degrading to both the game and the reviewer. Now, this is just one recent example, but digging through internet archives will easily turn up other cases of these flame-fests.

And it’s not just in game reviews. Saying anything these days that another gamer doesn’t agree with will get you flamed. Why can’t there be normal human discussions between gamers these days? These flame-fests are one of the biggest detractions to online gaming for those not entrenched in the community already. Personally, I’ve had a few friends want to play online, but don’t want the hassle of being called racist names or cursed at just for playing the game the way it should be played.

Maybe it’s the anonymity that gamers feel online. If the person on the other end can’t see you, maybe some people feel like it doesn’t matter what they say. The same is true for online forums or chat areas. If people can’t see you or actually speak to you, you might think you can say whatever you want. But this really isn’t how it should be. Do we all want to turn into the Comic Book Store Guy from The Simpsons? Do we, as a gaming community, want to be branded as a group of people who cannot engage in good conversation? Is it that hard to just grow up a little bit? In my opinion, it’s not that hard to do. But I guess only time will tell.

I just received a lot of hate because I just went 20-2-1 in COD with a M60E4 with Red Tiger Camo and a red dot :)
On a serious note though: You guys are right about everything. I belong to a lot of forums, and when people don’t like things, they just usually respond in 3 words about why the reviewer sucks and whatnot. If you are going to criticize people for a review, back your opinions up with examples of why the reviewer was wrong in a certain statement. As a Am. reviewer, I don’t mind if people criticize my review, as long as it is helpful criticism.

Also: During the whole PS3 vs 360 debate, I always offered counter examples for all my points, and I really proved a point, unlike people who say XBOX FAILS ALL THE TIME SO BUY A PS3!!! The counter argument is that while PS3 may be more reliable, the 360 has had much better games for the past 2 years (the gap is narrowing more now).

Honestly, I didn’t real the whole thing since I have to wake up at 530Am tomorrow to play squash before school, I’ll read it tomorrow man. Nice post though, its really nice you addressed that.

Yea i really have to agree with you here pandas, but that is just it. I dont know ur name im calling pandas….. how am i going to take you seriously? Thats not the point however. I was playing Resistance online today and was talking to this British guy and he was really nice (not a bad player either) we ended up playing for like 3 hours in a party and ended up in some really fun matches were it was us vs 5 and it was a lot of fun.

Thats why we all play games because its fun, and like many hobbies it’s expensive. This is a really high profile hobbies though with huge cooperations trying to get ur money. So developers make games that they think will sell, but there never perfect. I myself want a game thats great for me. I want a console that can play those games. No one knows what games will come out for the different consoles. So when a game like Mass Effect comes out i really want it. I have a ps3 and i cant afford a 360. So when my friend gets the game I really want it, but cant have it. Now one is better than the other. Some people even think of a console like a new car or cellphone and want to show it off. An example would be “Yo man I just got this 360 and live and H3, so I stayed up until 2 am pwnin some n00bs” Then this goes for features “Yo that PS3 got that internet browser so i can check gmail before i play, and check out some blu-ray movies” Is there a point to this no. But these people make videos like the PS3 song on you-tube. That makes me mad because i am like “its a great system and i played a lot for it why do u have to hate?” And thats ur question right there. Its a full circle.

It’s true, the fact that you cannot place a name or face to the poster gives them the freedom to act the way they would like to act in real life. The internet allows people to act like complete assholes without the fear of repercussions, and getting IP banned means little to most people.

I think it all stems from a fear parents now have of punishing or even scolding their children. These kids are growing up incredibly disrespectful. It shows when you see kids at the mall treating their parents like crap, and it shows online.

There is only one solution here.

Beat yo kids people, beat yo kids.

Is racnas for real or is english his/her 3rd language? Damn. Sorry dude but please turn on the spell check, learn some puncutation or something. A mistake here or there isn’t bad but it was painful trying to read that.

Example of forum banter above that happens to be true….

I think w/ the perceived anonymity inhibitions are cast aside and we see how shallow, uneducated and ugly people really are inside. A few may be trying to be funny, some may be parroting something they read or their parents unfortunately. What we are seeing here is mainly is a society who can only better themselves by putting down others rather than trying to improve themselves. When gaming and here someone is is trying to play the game and is fairly cool about how they treat perfect strangers, you just found a decent human. Congratulate yourself that person is a rare find indeed. If your on a 360 and your friend’s list is fairly empty, send him a message and friend invite.

@Rhomp - I wouldn’t call console gaming an expensive hobby, but I guess it is to other people. I would say Paintball can be an expensive hobby ($750 for a good gun), Cars (30K ), Building model cars/planes/etc. Also, I would say that PC gaming is MUCH more expensive than console gaming.

Its because gaming isn’t expensive that it has so much hate. I know a few people that don’t live in the best areas but have a 360 that just play on a SDTV, which really broadens the field of the user base. If consoles were 20K each, we would have almost no “hate” because a small percentage of the population would actually own them.

@Rhomp… We don’t use our real names on this site for a reason. We believe in solidarity here, and there’s a legitimate reason that one of us can’t use our real name at this point in time, we don’t publish them. However, if you must know, my name is Matt Banks.

@Fragloser you can get a very good paintball gun for under $200 (ICD ProMaster for example). A day of paintball is generally $75-100 per person (including food, paint, air). There are definitely more expensive hobbies out there, like those gas-powered RC cars.

Gaming, like paintball can get very expensive if you must absolutely have the top of the line stuff and be an early adopter. PSWii60 = $1050, without extra controllers and games, not to mention electricity costs, buying a HDTV, cabinets to hold it all, etc.

Any hobby is as expensive as you want it to be.

@ Fragloser- yea thats a good point and there is probably no hate in the really expensive car community, but most people who drive those cars are like 40. Theres a lot of kids playing these games and a lot of them want to be the best. Have the best console and be the best in game an dhave the most kills etc, i mean who doesent. The thing is they take it to far and become so defensive. I think it is expensive for people like me. Im in high school and i work but not a lot so i cant go out and get a 360 or 5 new games. If every one owed all of the consoles and all of the games there would be no hate either.

@Drunk Pandas- I completely agree with you that using ur real name for everything is quite a bad idea. What I was trying to say is that a lot of the time we hate on forums and in game. Its easy to forget that its just another guy (or girl) just like you wanting to have some fun on the other end. Thats about it…im sorry if that first part come off as offensive i just wanted to make a point that were all people

@Rhomp & Nostars - I see what you guys mean about gaming becoming an expensive hobby. For me, it can be a relativly cheap hobby. I only own 1 system, and only have the intention of owning 1 system. As for my TV, I did spend money on a good TV, but the TV has more than one use besides just gaming. What I’m trying to say is that some people throw a lot of money into their consoles, but you can game online with the bare minimum and still be better than someone with all the high tech stuff, which is why console gaming has grown so much.

On PC’s, it is getting harder and harder to game. I have a 8500GT with Vista and I have so much trouble playing CSS that I just ended up quitting and switching to 360.

I like competition though. It only gets bad when people start cursing saying they are the best at a game.

Oh and about the name thing, I always throw my name in at the end of my reviews, my name is so common :)
