Everyone remembers Time Crisis from the hay-days of arcades. Grabbing a gun with a buddy and firing away at the screen taking down enemies, throwing in massive amounts of quarters to continue and run through the game. Ahh good times. With Time Crisis 4, Namco tried to replicate that feeling, but just didn’t hit the spot.
The game utilizes a special GunCon 3 controller, which interfaces with the PS3 via sensors you put on top of your TV. Both the gun and the sensors connect via USB. I would have liked to have seen a wireless GunCon, but it’s not a deal breaker. The game has both Arcade and Mission mode, which adds FPS elements. Sadly, the FPS elements just don’t work out well. The controls are tough with the GunCon. You have to use the left analog stick to move, the right analog stick for camera and strafing, and the GunCon to aim. Adding in that third level of aiming is tough and annoying.
The worst part about the game, in my opinion, is you only get 3 lives in Arcade mode. In most instances, that’s not enough to get you through the game’s three stages. In the arcades, you just throw in more quarters. That’s not an option here. Maybe there’s a cheat to give you more lives, but as is, you won’t get far in your first couple play throughs.
Overall, the game isn’t very impressive. The graphics aren’t anything special and the gameplay doesn’t provide a great deal of fun. I’ll have a full review up next week where you can read more.
