Conan (PS3) Impressions

I’ve been playing Conan on the PS3 and I’ve been a bit confused. Do I like it? Do I not? I definitely don’t hate the game, but I definitely don’t love it either. I’d say somewhere in the middle. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Conan is a God of War-esque game, where you run around killing pirates, demons, and all kinds of bad creatures. One thing is for sure, the game is gory. Think Mortal Kombat on steroids. When you slice through an enemy with your sword, limbs and heads come off left and right. As you play, you can unlock new combos and upgrade those combos by using them over and over, similar to how weapon upgrades on Ratchet and Clank work. The biggest problem with the gameplay is the camera. There’s a lot of places where the camera will jump around, like if you try to walk into an invisible wall. With that said, there’s also some collision detection issues that play havoc on the camera in certain scenarios. The graphics in Conan are just okay. Nothing earth shattering, but not horrible either. I didn’t experience any screen tearing, clipping, or slowdowns, which is good.

Overall, Conan is somewhat fun, but lacks the story and depth to draw you in that similar style games possess. Expect a full review soon, but for now I’d say the game is just a rental.
