It’s been the most overlooked feature of the newest firmware update for the PS3, but I think it’s the greatest. You can now group Videos and Games into Albums. No more giant lists of videos or games and demos in your XMB. I went through and created albums for Demos, PSN Games, PS1 Games, Game Trailers, Game Videos, and Movie Trailers. It really makes it easier to browse around the PS3 dash.
If you’re wondering how to do this, here’s some step by step instructions:
- Highlight a game or video and hit Triangle, then go to Information
- Under Album, hit X to edit and name the Album whatever you want, hit Start to Apply, then Circle to back out of the edit screen
- Repeat the process for all items you want to add to a group. The predictive text will suggest the Album name after you type the first letter, so you don’t have to type it out every time.
- Once you’re done, hit the Square button to change the grouping under Games and Videos to Album Mode
I just went through and setup everything on my PS3 and I’m so much happier, especially under the Games category. Kudos on this feature Sony!

agreed, no more endless lists of files to trawl through, great way of sweeping away the clutter on the xmb
haha, grouping. whew. don’t tell me i was the only one that saw sexual innuendo there.
It is a great feature, now they just have to let us customize the icon for the group and it would be perfect, right now it just takes the top item, so for example I have Drake as my DEMOS folder Icon, Motorstorm as my PS3 GAMES and GO SKI as my PSN GAMES. Great feature and look forawrd to many more to come, like DIVX support announced this morning!
It is a truly awesome feature that I’ve been waiting for for a while, only problem is that the video’s icons don’t play when they’re in a folder. I just thought that was stupid and arbitrary.
My video’s icons have never played. Do you have to enable that feature somewhere?
@Drunk PAndas
Are you sure, because every PS3 I know plays the first 15 seconds of any video you have saved in you HDD. It even plays multiple clips at once as many as are shown in the screen, try playing a video and hit triangle to bring up the menu, the look for an icon that lets you assign from what part of the movie you want it to play the 15sec preview.
@emir – Never played previews for me. I always just get the plain movie icon next to every movie clip. Only videos I have were downloaded from the PlayStation Store
I just created the icon for a video and it works. Why aren’t these created automatically?
nice.. but where the hell is the in game access to the media bar? i want to listen to my own mp3s through my ps3 while playing and id like to chat with freinds in warhawk. WTF SONY hurry yer arse up!
I know… I wish they had the preview predefined when you d/l from the store…
I posted this to the official PS Blog, and got a response from users to just shut up and create my own…
I think it would look and demo more solid to the friends you invite over to see your PS3 if these were done for you… I am too lazy to do it myself and I bet 80% of ppl are the same.
PS I actually HAVE done it… but what a pain to do on your own
thanks
are you sure they dont play automatically, because mine does, all I do is intall the video on the PS3 and voila it plays the 1st 15 secs. Now if I dont like the 1st 15 secs then I go to the options when playing it and asign my own clip.
