Reader impressions Folklore

FolkloreHere is some reader impressions of Folklore for the PS3, via nostars again. (good work, we love input form our readers!) This is a game that is high up on my list of titles to pick up and review as well.

This is one game I have wanted since the first time I saw a trailer for it.

The game starts out with introductions of our main characters, Keats (a reporter of the occult) and Ellen (just some girl). Ellen gets a mysterious letter which seems to be from her long-deceased mother, asking her to come to Doolan to see her. Keats receives an equally eerie phone call from a woman, asking him to come to Doolan. As Keats discovers the coincidence of his and Ellen’s arrival, the story begins to unfold.

And storytelling is a huge part of this game. A meticulous story that takes our two characters through Doolan in search of answers (each with their own motives) leads them to the local bar, where they meet the local night life. Ellen and Keats each get their own ‘guide’ who takes them to the faery realm. It is in this faery realm, where they will get the answers they seek.

The story is presented partly in comic book form, and partly with CGI, which in my honest opinion makes this game feel more original.

Gameplay – To many, the gameplay will seem slow, and at the start, it is. Things pick up when you approach your first difficult fight. The game is part RPG, part action, part strategy, and in most cases you will need to decide whether to go on an offensive or wait for the enemy to give you an opening. The folk you defeat become yours to command, should you use the Sixaxis controls to capture them. Once captured, each folk has its own powers, powers which can be leveled by meeting certain pre-requisites. Some requirements are as simple as defeat x amount of that same folk. Others require gathering rare items.

Each night culminates in a battle with a Folklore, which is basically the stage’s boss. Although Ellen and Keats fight the same boss at the end of each stage, the boss uses different powers against each, and conversely, Ellen and Keats must employ distinctly different strategies to defeat them. Once beaten, you capture the soul of the Folklore. No, you do not get to command this boss, but I don’t want to spoil it for you.

Every night you will be tasked with finding a certain memento, which can then be traded for a portal to the faery realm, so you may continue on your quest.

You can choose to use either Keats or Ellen in ever single stage. This is entirely your choice. But there is a third option. If you want both sides of the story (and trust me, it gets interesting) you will want to do every stage with both characters.
